Patch Coney Fest: Get on the Coney Bus Tour!

This spring and summer, Patch is going all out coney. In addition to stories and contests, we'll be featuring great events around Metro Detroit, including a bus tour May 12 of some of the area's best coney island restaurants.

Michigan—especially Metro Detroit—loves its coney island hot dogs. We're as passionate about the secret sauces and recipes as the people and places that serve them.

Join Patch this spring and summer as we celebrate our region's signature dish with events, contests, stories and cool things to do, like this bus tour of Metro Detroit's finest coney offerings.

You can join authors of the new book Coney Detroit—Joe Grimm of Bloomfield Township and Katherine Yung of Brighton—on a bus tour of Metro Detroit for a tasting of their favorite coney island hot dogs.

The tour will visit some coney local treasures on May 12–including a stop at Dearborn restaurant –home of the Jim Padilla Special, named for the former Ford Motor Co. president. Also included is a stop at a Greek coney classic:  in Royal Oak.

On the tour, you'll hear the stories behind the restaurants that have made Metro Detroit the coney island capital. The authors will take you into the past and behind the scenes with anecdotes and photos that will help you see coney islands in a whole new light. The dogs, the sauce, the families, the different styles of coneys and how people across the country are copying the Detroit experience—it's all in there.

Enjoy a coney sample as you enjoy the history at each stop! The bus will make three stops crisscrossing the region, leaving at 10 a.m. in Detroit, then heading to Dearborn, Royal Oak and Eastpointe, and arriving back in Detroit around 2 p.m. Tickets are $35 each and available through D:hive Detroit.

Copies of the book, Coney Detroit by Katherine Yung and Joe Grimm, also will be available for purchase.

Reservations will be accepted through May 7. Space is limited, so get on the bus!

The event is sponsored by Patch.com, D:hive and Wayne State University Press.

The tour will go as follows:

  • Start at the D:hive Welcome Center at 1253 Woodward Ave.
  • Head to  in Dearborn, arriving at 10:30 a.m.
  • Leave Joe’s at 11:10 a.m. for  in Royal Oak
  • Arrive at Athens at 11:40 a.m.
  • Leave Athens at 12:20 p.m. for Western Coney Island in Eastpointe
  • Arrive at Western at 12:50 p.m.
  • Leave Western at 1:30 p.m.
  • Arrive at Lafayette/American downtown at 2 p.m.

Watch your local Patch.com site for more Patch Coney Fest events this spring and summer, and help us celebrate a Detroit icon.

Lafayette is the first choice if out of the area, but Leo's would be the best spot in Macomb!

What's this? No detour up to Brighton Coney Joe's? Outrageous! ;-)

Those of us with Patch sites out this way (Brighton, White Lake) are trying to plan our own Coney fun :) so keep an eye out for details in the next few months.

I've never been to either Lafayette or American. Guess I better do some of my own homework first.

I have a Groupon for Coney Joe's burning a hole in my pocket. I'll be getting there on my own -- and hope we do a far-west-side tour, too.

The cost includes bus tour and some eating around metro Detroit. There will be samplings of coneys at the three stops. "Coney Detroit" authors Joe Grimm and Katherine Yung will talk about their book, the history of the restaurants and coneys in Detroit.
Clare Pfeiffer Ramsey May 3, 2012 at 02:14 pm
Duly's is great, Al! I'm certain "Coney Detroit" author Joe Grimm would concur. The organizers tried to pick some places off the beaten path or with a unique story, and places that could accomodate a tour group. I'm sure Duly's will get a mention in the talk.
David Hensley May 4, 2012 at 02:14 pm
I agree that Duly's should have been included even though small, its the food we're there to sample and the history of the place. Oh well. Have fun!

Robert, I've been a huge booster for Pointe Hardware. Their prices are either in-line or better thanRead More big box and their service is amazing. You could probably do a home remodel by just leaching free advice from them.

Don't go to Village Ace Hardware! It's terrible. I needed a fuse, a light bulb, and a furnaceRead More filter. They didn't have any of them.

I absolutely LOVE our local, in-the-park hardware store!! They have what I need, and their friendlyRead More staff know where to find what I need! I really can't stand the "new" Village Ace Hardware. Not only are the staff NOT friendly, but they don't even know their own stock...or much about everyday hardware needs :(
