Treasure Trove Expands Into Former Cavanaugh’s Store

The popular Village consignment and antiques shop has needed the extra room for a long time, its owner says.

Citing his customers’ demand for more consignment sale opportunities, the owner of is expanding into the store that formerly housed in the Village in downtown Grosse Pointe.

Just months after opening Treasure Trove in May 2009, Mason Haddow found he did not have enough room to carry both his own inventory and the merchandise his customers were asking him to sell on a consignment basis.

So when Cavanaugh’s, which is adjacent to Treasure Trove, , Haddow made a bid for the space. Georgia Valente, who owns both buildings, approved the expansion and Haddow signed a lease for the additional space last week.

The post office will stay, said Haddow, anticipating the question on everyone’s mind. Grosse Pointers love the small, less-congested alternative to the post office on Mack Avenue, he said, and it’s a service to the community. Moreover, he said, it will bring invaluable foot traffic into his store. It won’t stay exactly where it is, however. The post office will move on July 25 from its present space in Cavanaugh’s to the Treasure Trove’s current location at 16847 Kercheval. Service in the post office will remain uninterrupted during the expansion and construction scheduled for next week.

Haddow said the current location of the Treasure Trove will reopen on July 25 and the expanded portion will open the first week of August. A grand opening is scheduled from 6 to 10 p.m. on Aug. 13, during which refreshments will be served and candles will be given away while supplies last.

Haddow, who estimates about 80 percent of the merchandise in his store is consignment, said the store’s expansion will finally allow him to grow his own inventory, including numerous items from three warehouses in Roseville. He plans to devote the current Treasure Trove location to jewelry, gift items and crystal. The new space will house furniture, rugs and other large items.

“It’s going to look very elegant—very classy and very warm,” said Haddow, noting that the walls will be a mustard-tan color. “It’s also going to have a much bigger receiving area for drop-offs. The current receiving area is very narrow.”

Store hours will change to accommodate the post office customers, he said. The hours will be as follows:

  • 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Wednesday
  • 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday
  • 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday
  • 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday

The store will be closed Sunday. Haddow said he also will offer expanded, flexible drop-off hours, although they have not yet been determined. The store currently accepts drop-offs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays and from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursdays.

Haddow, who organizes estate sales for customers upon request, is also looking to add another three employees to his staff. He said shoppers can look forward to a vast array of items at prices far lower than they’d find in retail outlets. That’s the nature of consignment, he pointed out.

“People who want to sell their things,” he said, “are willing to sell them at a discount.”
