Visions for Vacancies: Neighboring Mack Stores

Share your ideas about what type of business you'd like to see fill these neighboring vacant commercial properties on Mack Avenue near Kenmore Drive in Grosse Pointe Woods.

The properties selected this week for Visions for Vacancies are a pair of neighboring storefronts on Mack Avenue near Kenmore Drive in

The stores are sandwiched between and La Moda salon. The stores formerly houses restaurants, Quiznos and Thai Cafe, both of which closed last year.

Located at 20083 and 20087 Mack Avenue, both properties are for lease and are owned by the same individual. The store fronts are sub-addresses of 20091 Mack Avenue, according to city property records.

The space at 20083 Mack Ave. is 1,800 SF and for lease for $2,000 a month plus any tax increase, according to the listing, which also highlights the location as good for a restaurant.

The space at 20087 Mack Ave. is also 1,800 SF and for lease for $2,000 a month plus any tax increase, according to the listing, which also highlights the location as being good for a restaurant.

Both locations have parking behind the respective storefront.

Thanks for spotlighting our city's most obvious business dilemma. One question: According to his blog on Patch, Woods' council member Kevin Ketels claims that the Woods business district (read: Mack Avenue) has a consistent 94 per cent occupancy rate, which - as proudly stated in PR man Ketels' blog - matches Birmingham and ranks among the top cities in the U.S. If all that's true, why worry about filling such a few empty buildings?

Probably not an option size wise--but an Apple store.

Probably because 100% is the goal.

No need for another Apple store. Visit Wireless Zone, a Verizon Wireless Premium Retailer, at 20315 Mack Avenue (by Pancake House) for all your Apple and iPhone products and accessories.

A tea place would be cool, similar to teavana in Somerset.

A reader emailed me this suggestion: "Hi, Sara, would someone pleeeeease open an Indian restaurants on Mack in either the Brys or Kenmore location??? Yummy!"

Another reader also emailed me: "It looks like an ideal location for a Hallmark gift store, which Grosse Pointe Woods desperately needs."

Parking on Mack at these locations will make it difficult to recruit a larger business. I also think a tea store or an Indian restaurant would be a good fit if parking were not an issue.

I'd at least shop here. And maybe a bead store next door?

Thought it might be an April Fool's Day joke, but check this out. Michigan Legislature is considering approving 8 new casinos around the state. How about now-vacant Robusto's for the "Grosse Pointe Woods Casino"? Maybe the Woods could recapture some of the tax money they lost on that saloon and fix some crumbling streets with the rest. The Woods mayor and council would oppose gambling, you say? Hey, they're asking taxpayers to trust them with millions in Headlee Override tax money for years to come. Now there's a real gamble.

how about an Apple store in the village where the old Borders book store was?
