Yoga Shelter to Offer Athletic Seminar

The Yoga Shelter is hosting a weekend-long seminar featuring an expert who will focus on strength training involving yoga for athletes.

In late January, the will offer a weekend of strength training for athletes given by an expert who is being brought to Grosse Pointe from Raleigh, NC.

The seminar includes four sessions beginning Friday, Jan. 20, through Sunday, Jan. 22, that each focusing on a different part of strength training.

Sage Roundtree specializes in yoga for athletes. She is a contributor to many well-recognized publications including Runner's World, Yoga Journal, USA Triathlon Life and Endurance magazines. She is also an accomplished author a variety of books geared to athletes.

Roundtree herself is a runner and triathlete, including an Ironman, in addition to being a yoga teacher at her own company, Carrboro Yoga Company. She is an endurance coach and teaches seminars similar to the one being offered by Yoga Shelter around the world, according to her website.

Grosse Pointe Yoga Shelter's Donna Orbovich said this is . The choice to bring Roundtree in for an athletic-focused seminar relates to the heavy focus on fitness by many Grosse Pointers, she said.

There are a lot of runners and bicyclists in the Grosse Pointes—in addition to the numerous other organized sports—and strength training is an important element to any athlete.

The seminar is a chance for athletes to learn about how yoga can add to their training schedule, Orbovich said. It is open to anyone of any skill/fitness level, she said, highlighting that is intended to help people learn and improve their athletic experience.

Already Orbovich has had about 25 people sign up for the seminar and she's hopeful to get more, noting the level of education and knowledge Roundtree has to offer.

The four sessions are as follows:

Friday Jan. 20

  • 7:15 to 8:45 p.m. Healing

Saturday Jan. 21

  • 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Strength and Flexibility
  • 1:30 to 3 p.m. Focus and Awareness for the Athlete

Sunday Jan. 22

  • 8:30 a.m. Practice with Roundtree

The seminar is priced as a package for the weekend at $105, Orbovich said. She priced it keeping in mind those who sign up may not be able to attend every session due to other commitments.
