Do you like to read? If your reading this blog, I sure hope so. I always considered myself a wide reader. We all have blind spots, don't we? It was brought to my attention that I don't read fiction. Once this revelation about my reading habits was made I decided to make a change. Usually I read books about sales, people skills, or history. I know it sounds pretty boring doesn't it. I can honestly say I haven't read a novel or any fictional book since I was in high school.
So where do you start? After much consideration, I decided to read my first Hemingway. I have always read about the man, but I had never read any of his writings. I picked up "A Farewell to Arms" which is more or less a love story set against the backdrop of World War I. It's been a fascinating read so far. By now you're probably asking what my point is? I mean why is the Real Estate Blogger telling me about WWI love stories? And my answer is pretty simple. I have come to the conclusion that we all need to sloooooooow it down a bit.
Our world is so fast paced today. Especially the real estate business. No matter where you are or what you are doing you are only a click of a button away. I will be enjoying a weekend with my wife and dog and go to upload some pictures to facebook only to be messaged by a friend looking for info about a house that just listed. Text messages, emails, phone calls and on and on it goes. We are all so available today. Other Realtors are the worst offenders. They will email you an offer at 8pm on a Saturday and be calling at 9pm if you haven't answered the email.
We all need to slow down. I am sure that you can relate. I am going to make it a point to not be so available. Could you imagine turning your phone off for a few hours a day? Some people hyperventilate at the thought. Now don't get me wrong I am not going to shun my responsibilities to my clients and my business but I am going to slow it down and enjoy the ride.
