To Clean or Not to Clean

To clean or not to clean that is the question.  Cleaning is one of the most important things a seller should do to get their home in proper showing condition.  So what does this mean?  It starts with overall cleanliness.  Keep in mind, as potential buyers walk through your home they are going to be peeking in all the places that you don't want them too. They will be looking in all your cupboards.  They will be looking at all your showers and or bath tubs.  They will be looking in closets.  They will be looking under the stairs.  They will look everywhere.


This doesn't mean that your home has to look like a museum, but it definitely won't hurt.  Give the home a good general cleaning.  Make sure there are no hidden surprises.  And don't worry if you're uncertain about things.  I will point them out.  Some Realtors are uncomfortable telling clients they need to clean up the house.  I mean it's not my favorite thing but..........I have to protect your investment.  And if I believe that the home needs some loving, I am going to tell you.  Don't take it personal because it's not personal, its business.


What about staging?  I can't tell you what a difference it makes.  You don't need to rent new furniture, or anything but a little staging goes a long way.  How about setting out a few hand towels in the bathroom.  Maybe add a couple scented candles for a nice touch.  It's amazing how a few minor things like air fresheners or those little oily stick things(ladies you know what I am talking about) make a huge difference in the way a home shows.  Imagine if the home next door to you was a dirty bank owned home for sale.  Nobody lives there, so it always smells musty and is closed up.  It may be a nice floor plan, but usually it's a bit dirty and not very welcoming.  A buyer then comes over to your place, and it's clean,  smells fresh, with a little staging.  It could be the difference between a for sale and a sold sign!
