Beaumont Day of Dance Draws Hundreds

Women, men, small children and families came to the health fair at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial Saturday.

More than 500 people attended the Beaumont Grosse Pointe Spirit of Women's Day of Dance health fair Saturday, during which free dance lessons and cooking demonstrations were offered.

The Spirit of Women is a national campaign to help women become more health-conscious and proactive with not only their own health but their families health too. Beaumont Grosse Pointe is one of only three hospitals in Michigan to participate in the national campaign.

About 15 Beaumont doctors attended and a few danced with patients or attendees during one demonstration about leading more active lifestyles to improve overall health.

The doctors were also available to answer questions and provide health information. Dozens of informational tables were set up throughout the Grosse Pointe War Memorial offering informational packets as well as free health-wise products.

Dr. Cheryl Gibson Fountain, a board certified OB/GYN, handed out about 600 podimeters, fitting people and explaining they need to take 10,000 steps a day to improve the circulation of blood and therefore reduced the risk for high blood pressure, diabetes and cardiovascular problems.

She said that studies have shown women who care about their own health and stay active are more likely to keep on top of their families health too, improving their overall healthy living habits.

Among the dance lessons, attendees were invited to learn about Zumba and Salsa dancing. They were also guided through a cardio warning dance, in which a song highlighted the signs of a heart attack or heart disease.
