Fire Damages Grosse Pointe Woods House

The house sustained heavy damage during the fire Thursday afternoon. No one was injured but the resident is now staying in a hotel while investigators work to determine the cause.

Grosse Pointe Woods Department of Public Safety is investigating the cause of a house fire that left a Roslyn Road home heavily damaged Wednesday.
Crews were called to the house at 1961 Roslyn about noon Wednesday by a neighbor. The neighbor had been alerted to the fire by a handyman who was sitting on the porch waiting for the resident to return home so he could cut the grass, Woods Sgt. Raymond Yonkowski said.
The handyman told public safety officers he was sitting on the porch when he started hearing snapping and popping from inside the house and then the porch filled with smoke--prompting him to seek help at the neighbor's house, Yonkowski said.
The two story house has been shuttered by plywood on the front door and several side windows. There is also a tarp covering a hole that was made in the roof while battling the blaze.
Yonkowski said no one was injured during the fire. The sole resident was not home at the time and is now being housed in a hotel by his insurance as investigators work to determine the cause, he said.
The fire ignited in the living room near a wall, Yonkowski said. There were no obvious signs of the cause nor were there any obvious signs of anything suspicious to indicate the fire was started on fire, he said.
The fire was brought under control in about 30 minutes and put out entirely in about an hour, Yonkowski said. It was considered a three-alarm fire, which in the Pointes means that additional manpower was called to the scene from Harper Woods, Grosse Pointe Shores and Grosse Pointe Farms.
Inside the house, the living room sustained heavy fire and water damage. The entire house sustained heavy smoke damage, Yonkowski said.
