Why Go: The Freddy Cole Quartet, featuring the international recording artist Cole, headlines the Dirty Dog Jazz Cafe this weekend.

Why Go: Enjoy a free live concert Thursday nights as the Music on the Plaza series launches its 2011 season tonight. On the opening bill: the Grosse Pointe North and South High School Jazz Bands. In case of rain, concerts will be held at Maire Elementary School, 740 Cadieux.

Why Go: Enjoy the Grosse Pointe Artists Association's latest show, Wordplay, opening Friday night. Members get a special preview at 6 p.m.

Why Go: Bring the kids to the ice cream social at Dexter M. Ferry Elementary School, which includes an obstacle course bounce house, carnival games, train rides, crafts from Arts & Scraps, putt putt, magicians, animal balloons and ice cream. Plus there will be hot dogs for sale, as well as sweets and drinks available for purchase at the bake sale. Tickets will also be sold for the Tin Can Raffle and the 50/50 Raffle.
Pricing: $6 per student; kids 4 and under get in free.

Where/When: 15115 E. Jefferson; 9 a.m.-3 p.m. June 11.
Why Go: The West Park Farmers Market is now open each Saturday for the season, with a special event -- an art fair -- planned for today. Stop in and buy locally grown produce, fresh breads and pastries, organic butter, meats and cheeses, flowers, specialty vendors, music, lunch and more.
