Grab & Go Kids Planner

Patch's picks for family-friendly activities this week featuring boats, pets and a charity kick-off party.

Boat shows, Relay for Life launch parties, pet adoption events and more — Patch has plenty of options this week.

FAMILY BEST BETS OF THE WEEK

Where/When: Cobo Center. Monday-Thursday, 3-9 pm; Friday and Saturday, 11 am-9 pm, and Sunday, 11 am-6 pm, through Feb. 20.
Why Go: Boating is a big deal for Michiganians, and this event is great entertainment for the whole family, whether it's browsing boats, enjoying free hula lessons Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30 pm or checking out the Shark Encounter exhibit — everyone can enjoy the fun and dream a bit of summer.
Pricing: $12 for adults; children 12 and under are free with an adult; seniors 62 and older get in free Feb. 14.

Where/When: Grosse Pointe North High School, Tuesday, Feb. 15, at 5 pm.
Why Go: It’s a chance to sample menu options for elementary, middle and high school programs, and Sodexo food service will discuss healthy food options and invites feedback.
Pricing: Please RSVP by e-mailing michelle.knotts@gpschools.org.

Where/When: St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, Tuesday, Feb. 15, at 7 pm.
Why Go: This seminar aims to nurture healthy relationships, so it’s perfect for teens just starting to date. Those who attend will learn signs of bad relationships, issues with power and control, and how parents and friends can help.
Pricing: Free. Please register by calling 313-432-3832.

Where/When: Grosse Pointe Woods Community Center, Wednesday, Feb. 16, from 6:30-8 pm.
Why Go: It’s the kickoff party for the 2011 American Cancer Society Relay for LIfe of Grosse Pointe. (The walk will be held May 14-15.) There will be refreshments and desserts, and you can learn more and register, and try and give cancer the heave-ho!
Pricing: Everyone is invited to check out this uplifting and beneficial cause.

Where/When: Windmill Pointe Park, Wednesday, Feb. 16, starting at 6:30 pm.
Why Go: Moms can take their son (or sons) for a special night at the movies. They’ll enjoy popcorn, beverages and a fun flick. Moms and sons will take home a special keepsake photo to commemorate the night.
Pricing: $12 per pair; $6 for every additional child.

Where/When: The Neighborhood Club, Saturday, Feb. 19, from noon-3 pm
Why Go: Bring home a new best friend. The Grosse Pointe Animal Adoption Society holds adoption events twice a month. Volunteers give time and attention to the animals they foster, so any cat, dog or rabbit you’re looking to adopt will have had a complete background check so you’ll know whether they prefer to be the only dog in the house or if they love kids. Plus these animals are up-to-date on vaccinations and have been spayed/neutered.
Pricing: It’s free to look, and free to volunteer or foster an animal, but pet adoption fees/donations vary, from $125 for a kitten, to $200 for two kittens, $100 per adult cat, senior cats and dogs vary, and puppies/dogs are $285. All animals have had health screenings and vaccinations, and the fee includes sterilization.
