Happening this Weekend: A Feast for the Senses

Where/When: , 6 and 8:30 p.m. Aug. 4-6, and 10:30 p.m. Aug. 5 and 6.
Why Go: Hear native Detroiter Duane Parham perform his sax stylings this weekend.

Where/When: The Detroit Institute of Arts, 5200 Woodward, Detroit; 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Aug. 5.
Why Go: Enjoy a Friday full of fun at the DIA with music, crafts and art. From 11 a.m.-3 p.m. everyone can practice making their own Cylinder Seals, an ancient way of signing one's name and proving ownership. From 6-9 p.m. everyone can practice making Uchiwa, Japanese paper fans. At 7 and 8:30 p.m. enjoy performances by the George Cole Quintet, with music that brings to mind Gershwin, Mercer and Porter. And of course, it's Friday, so the galleries will be open for drawing.
Pricing: Museum admission is $8 for adults; $6 for seniors; $4 for kids 6-17; and all events are included with admission. Of course, members get in free.

Where/When: , 5:30-10 p.m. Aug. 4.
Why Go: Enjoy a free family fun night full of food, music and a movie, thanks to Park*It. Show up early at 5:30 p.m. and purchase hot dogs, smoked sausage, pulled pork, chicken, sides and drinks, and enjoy ice cream bars and snow cones from Kona Ice. At 6 p.m. Cliff Erickson will peform silly songs for the kids and kids at heart, and youngsters can enjoy the splash pad, playscape or silly characters. At 7 p.m. the movie begins; tonight's feature is Yogi Bear.
On a side note, "Park*It" will be taking donations of new or gently used K-8 books for the "Turning the Page on Illiteracy" program.


Where/When: Kercheval and St. Clair, Grosse Pointe; 7 p.m. Aug. 4.
Why Go: Enjoy a free music on the Plaza. The series closes out this evening with a big band performance by the Rhythm Society Orchestra.

Why Go: Members of the Grosse Pointe Symphony Orchestra will perform works by Bach and Handel in the Moross Cafe at St. John Hospital. Special guest soloists Don Baker and Laurie Landers Goldman, both members of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, will perform.
