Happening This Weekend: DSO, Centennials and More

Music is all around this coming weekend and beyond, with the DSO at Ford House, War Memorial kicking off its summer fest, and more.

Highlights for the week:


Where/When: Kercheval and St. Clair, 7 p.m. July 7.
Why Go: Enjoy music on the Plaza each Thursday night. Tonight's act is The Sun Messengers, sure to get everyone in a party mood with their amped-up, high-energy sound.
Pricing: Free.


Where/When: ; daily, 6 and 8:30 p.m. through July 9, and 10:30 p.m. seatings July 8 and 9.
Why Go: Hear renowned pianist and vocalist Johnny O'Neal tickle the ivories as as he headlines at the Dirty Dog Jazz Cafe this weekend.

Where/When:; 8:30 p.m. July 8 and 9.
Why Go: Picture it: An evening of classical music on the grounds of a beautiful, historical estate, topped off by a fireworks finale. That's what you'll get when the Detroit Symphony Orchestra comes to the Ford House this weekend to perform stirring classical favorites. Visitors can stroll the grounds, enjoy music and be awestruck by the fireworks at dusk.
Pricing: In advance, ticket prices are $20 for adults, $12 for children. At the gate, adult tickets are $25, and children, $15. Visit www.dso.org or call the box office at 313-576-5111 to get tickets. Parking is available on the grass lot directly across the street from Ford House. Cost is $2 per car. .

Why Go: Grosse Pointe Shores is blowing out 100 candles and celebrating all weekend long, but today there's plenty of fun planned for spectators, including a parade that begins at noon at Ford House, where it will travel to Osius Park. Then residents can enjoy boat exhibits, cars on display, history for show, a splash party for, picnic and more.

Where/When: , 8 p.m. July 10.
Why Go: Enjoy a night of folk and acoustic music as Billy Brandt and his Basement Band come to Dylan's to perform.
Pricing: $5 cover.


Where/When: , grounds open at 6 p.m., the concert starts at 7:30 p.m. July 13.
Why Go: Grosse Pointe War Memorial is kicking off its Summer Musical Festival, with live acts every Wednesday through Aug. 10. Bring a blanket or chair to chill on, perhaps a picnic supper, and sit back and enjoy live music. Tonight's act is news anchor/singer/author Devin Scillian & Arizona Son.
Pricing: $8 per person, and a child 10 and under gets in free with a paying adult; cost is $4 per additional child. Or enjoy a deal with two adults and two children under age 10 for $16.
