Imported from Detroit: A Coney Island Opens in Hollywood

Our beloved Coney dogs are getting the Hollywood treatment with a new restaurant on the Sunset Strip. Can California really do Coneys right?

A line began to form outside Coney Dog at noon Monday in West Hollywood, the local . It was the first official day of business for the Sunset Strip's new Detroit-themed restaurant.

"These are hot dogs straight from Detroit. The chili is also from Detroit," Nick Vlassopoulos said from behind the counter, pointing to a natural casing hot dog made from beef, topped with an all-meat beanless chili and diced onions. "After two or three of these, you'll still feel great — maybe one burp."

Read more about the restaurant, which includes – in perfect California fashion – a vegetarian Coney, . What do you think about that, Metro Detroit? We're not sure that would fly at Lafayette or American.

Can California do Coneys right? Detroit can't even do coneys right! We all know real coneys come from Flint!

Well, I love coney dogs and I get them where I can. In Dearborn though I always go to Senate Coney Island on Greenfield. In Detroit I like going to Lafayette. I still have to try out the National though....never had it.

My son has already been to the LA location twice!

John, what is the difference between a Flint and a Detroit Coney?

I love it!

Downriver, Zorba's Coney Island is the place. A vegetarian coney is just wrong.

Lafayette is the absolute best! The service is quick and friendly, not to mention the food is amazing! Where else in Detroit can you go and have white collars & blue collar sitting next to each other and enjoying a great meal? One of my fav spots in Detroit.

I am native to the Flint area and let me tell you, it is in the chili sauce and the actual hot dog. Detroit has amazing chili sauce, but Detroit Coney Islands do not always use Koegel brand hot dogs. Dearborn Sausage and Kowalski hot dogs have NOTHING on a Koegel Vienna. lol

Agreed.

Koegel all the way. Yay!

I think it's about time, I knew this would be a great idea, but never had the funds to do it !

I have a Bro. In Law, in Denver, he use to be a news director at 2, a frozen case of SLIDERS from White Castle, always means a free room when I am in Town, he craves them.

Nick Vlassopoulos is originally from Shelby Township and is part of the group that brought Coney Dog to Hollywood. His father, Phil, is the owner of Apollo Coney Island in Sterling Heights which has been there for 40 years.

My uncle in the UP is the same way. He was born & bred in detroit and always gets a case for the drive home after visiting.

Stacy, great call about white & blue collars eating together. A few years ago I was at Lafayette on a typical workday lunch and while I'm eating a stretch Mercedes with tinted windows pulls up next to the restaurant. Mike & Marian Illich step out of the car and into Lafayette to enjoy lunch, on their own, no entourage, special service or anything. I thought that was pretty cool.

Another vote for Senate Coney Island, as a kid I was introduced to coney's at the now long gone orginal SCI up on Michigan Avenue between Martin & Livernois. We now go to one on Plymouth Road in Livonia. Around home here in White Lake its Dave's all the way!

Robert, I've been a huge booster for Pointe Hardware. Their prices are either in-line or better thanRead More big box and their service is amazing. You could probably do a home remodel by just leaching free advice from them.

I absolutely LOVE our local, in-the-park hardware store!! They have what I need, and their friendlyRead More staff know where to find what I need! I really can't stand the "new" Village Ace Hardware.
