This Week in Grosse Pointe: May 13

A variance hearing related to the former Borders building in the Village is among the many items happening this week in the Grosse Pointes. St. John Providence Health System is seeking an area variance to convert the building into mostly office space.

Here are a few of the highlights of events scheduled this week in the Grosse Pointes: 

1. The City of Grosse Pointe council will have a zoning variance hearing Monday beginning at 7 p.m. to consider a proposal by St. John Providence Health System to buy and utilize the former Borders building. The variance being sought is to turn most of the building into office space for various medical departments and to keep approximately 15 percent of the building retail facing Kercheval Avenue. 

2. The Grosse Pointe Business Association of Mack Avenue will have a sidewalk sale from Thursday through Saturday this week.

3. The Grosse Pointe Farms city council will meet Monday beginning at 7 p.m. According to the agenda (an online version of the agenda was not available), the council will discuss:

  • a zoning request from American House regarding Henry Ford Cottage Hospital related to the conversion of the building into senior housing
  • host the public hearing on the 2013/14 fiscal year budget
  • election of a mayor pro-tem
  • the city's new website
  • bids for road repaving for 2013
  • reappointment of members of several boards

4. Grosse Pointe Shores Mayor Ted Kedzierski will host office hours at city hall Friday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Call 313-881-6565 to make an appointment.

5. The Grosse Pointe Board of Education will meet Monday beginning at 7 p.m. According to the agenda, the board will discuss: 

  • projected enrollment for the 2013/14 school year
  • minutes from several open and closed meetings held within the last month
  • the Monteith Elementary School drop-off plan
