Exercise and Wellness in Survivorship

Beaumont Health System hosts event in St. Clair Shores for breast cancer survivors

Sharing and Caring, Beaumont Health System’s patient education and support group for breast cancer survivors, will host an “Exercise and Wellness in Survivorship” community event on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. in St. Clair Shores. The free event will be held at Beaumont Rehabilitation Services, 23715 Little Mack, suite 200.

“Our goal is to help connect survivors with community resources and introduce them to therapists with advanced training, experience and desire to work with oncology patients,” says Beaumont physical therapist and program coordinator, Mary Alice Hewelt. “We have individualized programs and activities available to help survivors wherever they are in their recovery.”

The cancer survivorship exercise and wellness event will include physical therapists who specialize in working with breast cancer patients with lymphedema. These patients may feel aching, pain, swelling, weakness or tightness in the affected arm as a result of breast surgery or radiation treatment.

Those attending the event can learn about an exercise program to meet their specific needs. Following a screening and approval by their physician, participants can take part in a supervised exercise program alone or with others, or can receive an activity plan that can be completed at home or in a fitness center.

“For those who require more specialized and personalized care, traditional physical therapy may be recommended. Treatments may include therapeutic exercises, aerobic exercises, manual techniques or lymphedema treatment to help manage movement problems related to weakness, surgical restrictions and inactivity,” says Hewelt.
