Ed Rivet, Right to Life of Michigan legislative director, speaks in Grosse Pointe Farms Tuesday, March 18.

The 7:30 p.m. forum sponsored by the Eastside Republican Club is open to the public and will be held at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial, 32 Lake Shore Road.

“The sanctity of human life, enshrined in our Declaration of Independence, is a key plank of the Republican Platform, so we’re anxious to learn more about this important topic,” said Ken Chadwell, ERC chairman.

Rivet is a graduate of Michigan State University where he studied pre-law, public policy, and earned a master’s degree in public administration. For three years he served as legislative aide in the Michigan House of Representatives.

Since 1988, Rivet has served as Right to Life of Michigan's legislative director, and worked to assist the passage of laws requiring parental consent and informed consent for abortion, protecting patients’ rights, and banning assisted suicide.

He was a driving force behind Michigan’s cloning ban in 1998, the first of its kind in the nation. He is also the principal author of the 2004 Legal Birth Definition Act to ban partial-birth abortion in Michigan. In the wake of Dr. Jack Kevorkian's lethal activities, in 1993 Rivet was appointed by the legislature to serve on the Michigan Commission on Death & Dying.

He has given countless media interviews, appearing in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, USA Today, plus live interviews on CNN and Good Morning America.

The Eastside Republican Club Forum is normally held on the third Tuesday of the month from September through June. Admission is free and the public is always welcome. Stay up-to-date and "like" the ERC on Facebook.
