Meet the South SunDevils solar car team before they race from Dallas to LA!

High school students from Grosse Pointe South are approaching the final lap in their fundraising goal to build and race a solar car this summer. They will be hosting a community meeting / fundraiser from 5:30-8:30 p.m., Wednesday, July 10 on the front lawn of Grosse Pointe South High School, 11 Grosse Pointe Boulevard. The finished solar car will be on display.

They will be traveling to Dallas to race in the Dell Winston Solar Car Challenge.  This race is limited to high school teams and has had participants from as far away as India in the past. This is the only race of its kind in the nation for high school teams.  The race is July 20-30 from Dallas to Los Angeles.  Here is a link to the organizers’ website: http://www.solarcarchallenge.org/challenge/

This is important for the school district in that the GPS Solar Car Team further develops the districts potential to offer more “STEM” oriented programs in the high schools. The GPS SunDevils will be the first high school solar car team from Michigan to race in the Dell Winston Solar Car Challenge. Scott Brunner, AP Physics teacher at South, as well as College of Creative Studies adjunct professor Kyle Watson, are both traveling with the students on the race.

Come see the car, meet the students, and cheer on a hometown team of students realizing an impressive goal!
