2 Teens Face Charges in Rash of Grosse Pointe Park Thefts

According to a written release, the second teenager, a 16-year-old from Detroit, is the cousin of the . 

The release, from Public Safety Director David Hiller, says the 16-year-old boy was arrested Nov. 20 about 5:45 a.m. after he was questioned when patrol officers found him in the area of several of the thefts.

During questioning at the police station, he admitted to stealing various items from several unlocked vehicles over several weeks. Loose change, cell phones, cash and other valuable items were taken from numerous vehicles since Nov. 14. 

The 16-year-old also had a great deal of loose change on him at the time of his arrest, according to the release.

Meanwhile, his cousin continued the crime spree until his arrest Dec. 1 in the garage of Leslie Faber, who used her dogs and yelling to keep him from moving until responding officers arrived to arrest him. 

Their arrests have helped Grosse Pointe Park police close approximately 12 cases—10 thefts from vehicles, one bicycle theft and the burglary of Faber's house, according to the release. 

Both teens admitted to the crimes and are facing criminal charges through Wayne County's juvenile system. 

Hiller, in the release, highlighted the importance of residents and their institutional knowledge of their own neighborhood, highlighting how residents are an asset to the police. 

"Our residents are our best eyes and ears. They know what does and does not belong in the neighborhood," the release states. "At the same time we want to remind everyone that we can help reduce crimes such as these by taking a few extra minutes to lock our cars and take some of our valuables in the house."
