Area Police Department Warns of Fundraiser Scam

The Harper Woods Police Department is warning area residents about a fundraising scam targeting area residents.

The Harper Woods Police Department released the following statement about a fundraiser scam:

"An alert resident contacted the police department today after receiving a solicitation letter from the American Federation of Police & Concerned Citizens Police Family Survivors Fund, out of Titusville, Florida. The letter advised that the organization was participating in a Wayne County area fundraising effort. Research by the responding officer revealed that although this is a valid and legal charity, they only donate around 16% of their proceeds toward any type of police benefit. They received a zero rating from Charity Navigator and have refused to cooperate with the Better Business Bureau. Should you receive this letter, our recommendation is to disregard the letter.

Anyone wishing to make a donation that will benefit legitimate police charities may contact the Grosse Pointe / Harper Woods Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 102 at grossepointelodge@yahoo.com."
