ATM Stolen From Grosse Pointe Park Party Store

The unusual type of theft is being investigated and area police departments have been alerted. Similar crimes have not been reported in the area.

The early morning break-in at a Grosse Pointe Park party store is under investigation after responding officers found that an ATM from inside had been stolen.

An alarm triggered police to respond to the business at the corner of Kercheval Avenue and Wayburn Street May 15 about 6:45 a.m. The officers found that a glass door had been shattered and that an ATM housed inside for years was gone, according to a report.

City of Grosse Pointe Park Public Safety Director David Hiller said the crime is unusual and the Park has not ever had a similar crime reported. Police do not know what was used to break the business' front door as nothing was left behind, he said.

The theft likely involved more than one person, Hiller said, noting the heavy nature of removing such a machine. Fingerprint evidence is unlikely because the thieves probably wore gloves, he said.

The ATM did not belong to one bank or financial institution but was a generic machine that served anyone who wanted to use it, Hiller said.

Other than the door being damaged, the crime left no other damage to the store and area police departments have been alerted to the theft Hiller described as unusual. Similar crimes have not been reported in the area as of Friday, he said, but officers are communicating between departments.

While all dollar bills have serial numbers and security features, none will help in this case, Hiller said. The cash supply is not tracked in such a fashion by the vendor who supplies the machine, he said.

Anyone with information or who may have seen anything is asked to call City of Grosse Pointe Park police at 313-822-7400.
