Business Break-In Suspect Waives Exams

The Detroit man accused of breaking into four GP businesses waived exams in Woods, City and St. Clair Shores.

The 40-year-old Detroit man arrested in several business break-ins in the City of Grosse Pointe, the Woods and St. Clair Shores waived his preliminary exams in the Pointes. 

Kory Kordell Smith is being held in the Macomb County Jail on charges from all three cities as well as a parole violation from the Department of Corrections. 

Smith is accused of breaking into four Grosse Pointe businesses— in the Woods, and ,  and a doctor's office near Valente's all in the City.

Smith appeared before Woods Judge Theodore Metry Wednesday and City Judge Russell F. Ethridge Thursday for preliminary exam hearings. In both cases, Smith waived his exam and a new arraignment on information hearings has been set for Frank Murphy Hall of Justice. 

Smith is due back in court on his Grosse Pointe cases March 10 and March 16. Smith also waived his preliminary exam in St. Clair Shores earlier this week.

In Grosse Pointe, he was charged with three counts of breaking and entering with intent and two counts of larceny in a building. He has also been charged as a habitual offender, which makes each offense punishable with life sentences. 

He has a lengthy criminal history, which includes more violent crimes and a recently served prison sentence for breaking and entering in Macomb county, according to the Michigan Department of Corrections website. 

at the prompting of his family and was turned over to St. Clair Shores police. Meanwhile, Woods officers had been looking for him after they confirmed fingerprint evidence identifying him from the Josef's break-in.
