Carjackers Arraigned on 5 Felonies Each

The two men arrested earlier this week by police in Harper Woods and the Grosse Pointes will be arraigned this afternoon in 36th District Court on multiple felonies stemming from the attempted carjacking and shooting.

The men, Ricardo Sanders, 25, and Steven Powell, 30, were arraigned in 36th District Court in downtown Detroit about 1 p.m. today. The men are each being charged with the following crimes:

  • carjacking
  • assault with the intent to murder
  • assault with the intent to rob armed
  • felonious assault
  • use of a firearm in committing a felony

The men are accused of attempting to steal a car from a man and a woman who were traveling on Gratiot Avenue about 1:30 a.m. Monday. One of the men approached their car while they were at a stop light brandishing a gun and demanding their car.

They refused and the man shot both of them. They called 911 from their cell phones, reaching Harper Woods via the nearest cell phone tower, whose dispatcher directed them to drive to the police station. 

Harper Woods Police along with officers from , and arrested Sanders and Powell after they chased the victims through the parking lot of the Harper Woods Police Department on Harper Avenue.

During the arrest, police found an AR-15, which is a semi-automatic weapon that had been modified to include a magazine that was loaded with 100 rounds of ammunition--a weapon not often encountered in Harper Woods or the Pointes.

Each the carjacking, assault with the intent to murder and the assault with the intent to rob armed charges are punishable by up to life in prison. The felonious assault charge is punishable by up to two years in prison and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony is punishable by up to two years in prison.

A search of both men in the state's offender tracking system shows neither have served sentences through the Michigan Department of Corrections.
