Charity Basketall Game Draws Hundreds
The Grosse Pointe Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 102 donated $2,500 Tuesday to each the Grosse Pointe/Harper Woods Special Olympics and to Services for Older Citizens during the first charity basketball game with Detroit Lions.
About 800 people filled the stands of Grosse Pointe South's gymnasium Tuesday for a charity basketball game between the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 102 and a few of the Detroit Lions.
The game included Special Olympics athletes, public safety officers, amputees using prosthetics and a few of the Detroit Lions. The game was started with Anita Baker singing the national anthem and during halftime, the Lions spread out in the gymnasium, posed for pictures and gave their signatures to the game attendees.
One of the event organizers, City of Grosse Pointe Public Safety officer and FOP Lodge 102 President Joe Adams, said Tuesday the event was a success. He was thrilled with the turnout and amount of support shown by the community.

It was the first event of its kind in the Pointes but Adams said the FOP members would like it to become an annual fundraiser. Based on the turnout this time, he said, it is something that could easily grow.
Among the crowd was Executive Director of Services for Older Citizens Sharon Maier, who had her picture taken with each of the Lions and the Special Olympics athletes. She said she was impressed with the turnout and appreciated the efforts by the FOP to raise funds for her organization, which helps senior citizens in the Grosse Pointes and Harper Woods through home repair, food delivery, social events and more.
