Courts: 2 Men Arraigned, 1 Sentenced

The following information is gathered from the courts of the Grosse Pointes. Where arrests are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

One of two men arrested Aug. 20 after allegedly entered a plea of not guilty in Court this week. The Detroit man was arraigned on three charges, including unlawful driving away of a vehicle and receiving and concealing stolen property. Attached is a habitual offender count, which carries an additional penalty of life in prison. The habitual offender count stems from previous convictions that are of a similar nature in this case. The man entered a plea of not guilty and will return to court for a preliminary exam Sept. 14.

Sentence in Wallet Theft

Judge Russell Ethridge sentenced a Detroit man to complete 60 hours of community service in 90 days, to pay $428 in fees and fines plus restitution and banned him from on Mack Avenue for stealing another customer's wallet. The man admitted to the judge that he took the wallet off the cashier's station July 24, removed the cash and eventually returned the wallet to its owner. The theft happened after the wallet's owner accidently left behind his wallet following a purchase at the store and Staples had video surveillance of the crime.

Motorcycle Crash Ends in Arrest

A 55-year-old Grosse Pointe Farms man was arraigned in court late last week on charges of possession of stolen property after being arrested Aug. 16 by Grosse Pointe Park police. The man was found pinned under a motorcycle near Mack Avenue and Devonshire by a Park patrol officer. While responding, the officer discovered the man was not the owner of the motorcycle and it had been stolen only hours earlier from the owner's driveway in the 200 block of Mirabeau Place. Police woke the owner in trying to contact him about whether the 55-year-old pinned man had permission but the owner said he didn't know that man and did not give anyone permission to use it. He said he parked it at his home the prior night and now it was missing. He came to the scene and reported deep scratches to the body of the bike but said it otherwise seemed in good working condition, according to a report.
