Credit Fraud, Mail Theft Under Investigation in Grosse Pointe Farms

The following information is gathered from the Departments of Public Safety of the Grosse Pointes. Arrests do not indicate convictions.

Grosse Pointe Farms police are investigating several reports of credit fraud.

In the first case, a 53-year-old Grosse Pointe Farms woman reported receiving notice of a fraudulent account opened in her name. A company contacted her related to an overdue Sprint bill for nearly $2,000 but it is not her account. The address attached to the account is in Detroit, according to a report filed March 22.

In another case, Grosse Pointe Farms detectives are investigating several fraudulent purchases made on existing credits accounts as well as new accounts opened in the name of a 48-year-old resident. The fraudulent purchases were made in Michigan, Ohio and Illinois in mid-February at several different retailers including Victoria's Secret, Best Buy, Kohl's, Home Depot and Toys R Us, according to a report filed March 27.

Grosse Pointe Farms police arrested two 15-year-old Detroit boys March 16 shortly after 1 p.m. after they were spotted stealing a package from the front porch of a home on McKinley. The pair were carrying shovels, approached the house, knocked on the door and then left with the package after no one answered. A neighbor witnessed the crime and called police. The teenagers had opened the box around the corner and were found nearby by officers. Both were charged with larceny of mail, according to a report.

Traffic Stop Ends in Drug Arrest

Grosse Pointe Farms police arrested a 22-year-old Detroit man March 23 near Moross and Chalfonte following a traffic stop for an expired license plate. During the traffic stop, the officer discovered the driver's license was suspended and the driver had marijuana on him. The man was arrested on charges of driving on a suspended license and possession of marijuana. The officer took 3.6 grams of marijuana and a glass pipe into evidence, according to a report.

Teen Resident Reports Burglary by Fellow Teen

Grosse Pointe Farms police arrested a 17-year-old Grosse Pointe Park resident March 18 after an 17-year-old Ridgemont Road resident reported he broke into her home. The teen told officers she recognized the other teen as a drug dealer associated with her boyfriend, who was later identified as another teenage girl. The teenager at the house heard knocking at the door, ignored it after seeing who was there and went back to bed. A few minutes later, she heard him in the house in a Florida room trying to get further inside but the french doors were locked. The Park teenager was found nearby by City of Grosse Pointe officers and taken into custody, according to a report.

Jewelry Stolen by Relative

Grosse Pointe Farms police are investigating the theft of jewelry from a resident who suspects her son, who has a drug problem. The woman reported the theft March 17 after waking to find her son's car outside of the house. She had not seen him for about six months. She approached the car to find a woman who identified herself as the son's girlfriend. The woman went back into her home to find her son in the basement. He left the house and after he left, the woman discovered her jewelry box had been rifled through and pieces of jewelry were missing, according to a report.
