Driver Strikes Park Fence and Attempts to Flee, and Other Cases Investigated by Local Police

The following information is gathered from the Departments of Public Safety of the Grosse Pointes. Arrests do not indicate conviction.

Driver strikes park fence 

An alleged drunk driver drove through the intersection of Lake Shore and Vernier Oct. 18 and into the fence of Osius Municipal Park. Grosse Pointe Shores police were informed there was a hit an run in front of the Home Depot in Harper Woods and driver left the area heading eastbound on Vernier. Officers observed a Ford Ranger speeding on Vernier without its headlights on. The officer attempted to slow the vehicle, but the driver - a 70-year-old Clinton Township man - continued through the intersection and into the iron fence. An officer approached the vehicle with a gun pointed at the truck and ordered the subject out of the vehicle. The driver then attempted to put the car in reverse and attempted to flee. An officer used a baton to break the driver's side window and pull the man from the vehicle.  Officers noticed a strong smell of alcohol, and took him to Cottage Hospital for a blood draw. He was arrested on drunk driving charges.

While on bike patrol Oct. 11 near Grosse Pointe South, a Grosse Pointe Farms officer smelled burning marijuana and the odor became much stronger as a 2001 Oldsmobile Aurora approached on Fisher. The officer caught up to the vehicle and observed an expired Michigan temporary license plate, according to a report, and pulled the car over. The officer noticed a strong odor coming from the vehicle, and when the driver asked where the marijuana was, he said it was in a bowl on the floor. The officer also found a warm pipe with marijuana, a glass jar with marijuana, scale and cash. The 18-year-old from Harper Woods was arrested on marijuana possession charges.

City of Grosse Pointe police were called Oct. 11 to Beaumont Hospital for a report of an assault. A 20-year-old Clinton Township resident stated in a report that she had a baby and was trying to get back into bed when her boyfriend started arguing with  her. She was calling her mother to come for assistance, and her 21-year-old Detroit boyfriend got mad and pulled the phone from her hand and smacked her in the face, according to a report. The woman called the nurse and asked her boyfriend to leave. Officers spotted him on Cadieux, and arrested him on an assault charge.
