Grosse Pointe Farms Honors Longest-Serving Volunteer

Grosse Pointe Farms resident Anthony "Tony" Prohownik volunteered with the city as a reserve officer for more than 35 years. He was recognized Monday night before the city council.

Retired Grosse Pointe Farms Reserve Officer Anthony "Tony" Prohownik is the longest serving volunteer the department has ever had. Last summer, at 85, he decided to give up his volunteer role and retire from the Emergency Support Unit.

Director of Public Safety Dan Jensen recognized Prohownik this week before the city council for being the "longest-serving volunteer" the department's ever had. The exact number of years is not clear but officials know it was more than 35 years.

He was recognized last summer during a meeting with the entire volunteer force, during which he was given a lifelong police badge.

He and his wife, Wilma, attended Monday.

Both chatted with city employees before leaving and Prohownik thanked the director and city council for recognizing him. He began volunteering when he was still a school teacher. He retired from his profession years before retiring from the volunteer position.
