Grosse Pointe Officers to Play Lions in Benefit Basketball Game

Tickets are available per person or per family for the March 28 benefit game that will offer half-time autograph signings by the Detroit Lions and will benefit two local organizations.

Public Safety officers from the Grosse Pointes and six Detroit Lions players will compete Thursday in the second charity basketball game at Grosse Pointe South High School.

The game, sponsored by the Fraternal Order of Police Grosse Pointe Lodge #102, will benefit Services for Older Citizens and the Grosse Pointe Special Olympics organization, Lodge President Public Safety Offier Joe Adams previously told Patch.

The organization representing officers from the five Grosse Pointes and Harper Woods wants to give back to the community that is so supportive to them, he said. "We want to bring the community together for a fun evening," he said.

Last year, the game drew more than 1,000 people and Adams is hopeful this year will result in even more attendees.

Adams released a list of Detroit Lions this week who will play in the game this week. The players include:

  • Joique Bell (35)
  • Tony Scheffler (85)
  • Bill Bentley (28)
  • Herman Moore (81, retired)
  • Lance Long
  • Cory Schlesinger (30, retired)

Similar to last year, the game will feature half-a-dozen or so players from the Detroit Lions, officers from the five Grosse Pointes and Harper Woods as well as athletes from the Grosse Pointe Special Olympics organization.

At half-time, the Lions players will give autographs to anyone in attendance, Adams said.

All of the money raised through the game--tickets, food and other purchases--will go to the two non-profit organizations known for their service within the community.

Tip-off is 7 p.m. in the Grosse Pointe South gymnasium. Tickets will be available for purchase at the door.
