Grosse Pointe Woods Police Investigate Explosion

The following information is gathered from the Grosse Pointe Woods Public Safety Department. Arrests do not indicate conviction.

police are investigating an overnight explosion that broke two flowerpots and shook the walls of at least three neighboring homes this past weekend.

A resident in the 800 block of Blairmoor Court called police about 11:20 p.m. July 1 after finding two flowerpots destroyed. Pieces of one of the pots were found as far as 25 feet away from its original location, according to a report.

Neighbors reported hearing the explosion and having walls shake—to the point trophies were knocked off a shelf on a wall of a neighboring home, according to the report.

Sgt. Raymond Yonkowski said the case is still being investigated but detectives have been unable to find much to further it. There are no witnesses who saw the actual explosion, only the reports from the residents hearing it, he said.

The resident whose flower pots were targeted identified an ongoing dispute between himself and another person related to a barking dog but that man was not home when police arrived to question him, according to a report.

Yonkowski said they believe a large firework was used to cause the explosion given the time of year. Detectives do not believe the explosion was caused by a bomb and there is no evidence suggest it, Yonkowski said.

No one was injured and police have not had any other similar reports, he said.

The department has responded to complaints of fireworks but not any more than what is typical at this time of year. With the exception of the explosion, none of the complaints have been of a more serious nature either, Yonkowski said.
