Firefighters Battle Duplex Fire on Lakepointe

Crews from three Grosse Pointe public safety departments remain on the scene of a fire that has gutted the two story duplex. Officials do not believe residents were home at the time it ignited.

Firefighters from Grosse Pointe Park, the City of Grosse Pointe and Grosse Pointe Farms battled a duplex fire Sunday afternoon and remain on the scene trying to put out hotspots.

Crews were called to the house shortly before 1 p.m. Shortly before two, a crew of four firefighters entered the duplex with a running chainsaw to cut out areas inside believed to be housing hotspots.

The duplex is a rental unit in the 1000 block of Lakepointe Street in Grosse Pointe Park. Fire crews blocked the intersection of Lakepointe and St. Paul, hooking up another fire truck for water access.

Dozens of neighbors lined the sidewalk across the street watching crews battle the three-alarm fire and are questioning what happened. Two residents came to the duplex as crews were fighting the fire. One was at church, Park Capt. David Loch said.

No injuries have been reported as of 2:12 p.m. but paramedics are standing by with a stretcher outside the burning home prepared for any needs that may arise.

The house had been thoroughly engulfed in flames. It sustained heavy fire, smoke and water damage. The worst damage is likely on the second floor and part of the attic has burned away.

Patch is at to the scene, and will update the story later in the day.
