Lake Shore House Fire Ruled Accidental in Grosse Pointe Shores

Grosse Pointe Shores Director of Public Safety John Schulte is crediting a smoke alarm with "quite possibly" saving the residents lives.

The fire that heavily damaged a Lake Shore Road home June 12 has been determined to have been accidental, Grosse Pointe Shores Director of Public Safety John Schulte said Tuesday.
Investigators found the fire started in the library of the home at 981 Lake Shore Road. The fire ignited in a small radio/cassette player plugged in to the wall, Schulte said.
Two investigators handled the case: Grosse Pointe Shores Lt. Bill Nicholson and a contract investigator from the insurance company, according to Schulte.
The house sustained heavy smoke and water damage throughout. The library sustained heavy fire damage but firefighters were able to contain the fire to that area and prevented it from spreading to other areas.
Both residents were treated for smoke inhalation as a result.
Schulte said Tuesday and previously told Patch, the smoke alarms in the home helped save the residents. It woke the residents shortly before midnight. They were able to call 911 and get out of the house.
It took nearly two hours to extinguish the fire. Public safety officers had to deal with poor weather conditions at the scene, which was a hinderance to fighting the fire.
