Late Night Fire Heavily Damages Lake Shore Home in Grosse Pointe Shores

A smoke alarm alerted the Grosse Pointe Shores couple of the fire that had ignited while they slept late Wednesday. Grosse Pointe Shores Director of Public Safety John Schulte said the smoke alarm saved their lives.

Grosse Pointe Shores fire investigators spent most of Thursday at the scene of a Lake Shore Road home that was heavily damaged in a fire that ignited late Wednesday.

The home at 981 Lake Shore Road is boarded up following the blaze, which is under investigation.

Grosse Pointe Shores Director of Public Safety John Schulte said this case is an example of why smoke detectors are important. It was a life-saver in this situation, he said, explaining the residents woke to the alarm and called 911 about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The scent of fire and smoke radiated from the house Thursday afternoon.

One of the residents was treated for smoke inhalation otherwise no one was injured, Schulte said.

The residents got out after calling 911 before crews arrived, he said.

The rainy conditions did not make fighting the fire easy, Schulte said. The weather was clear when crews first arrived but a few minutes after midnight severe thunderstorms hit the area, making it challenging for firefighters.

The house sustained heavy smoke and water damage. The fire was contained to the area of the house where it started, Schulte said.

Investigators will determine the cause and origin.
