Man Arraigned in Several Grosse Pointe Business Break-Ins

The 40-year-old Detroit man accused in break-ins in several Detroit suburbs made his initial appearance before a Grosse Pointe judge.

Woods Judge Theodore Metry set a $100,000 bond for Kory Kordell Smith in charges stemming from four break-ins in the Pointes

Smith, 40, of Detroit, made his first appearance in court in the Grosse Pointe cases Thursday. He will return to the Woods court and to the City's court next week for his preliminary exam in both sets of cases. Metry set $50,000 bonds for his charges out of the Woods and for his charges out of the City. 

Smith is charged with breaking into in the Woods in December and three businesses in the City in mid-January including , and a doctor's office near Valente's.

In all of the cases, he broke into main entry points by smashing out glass or kicking down the door and then stole cash only. The doctor's office is the only business that did not have anything stolen. Smith left other valuables behind and police believe his motivation stems from a drug problem. 

Smith is also facing charges in similar break-ins in and Birmingham.

In Grosse Pointe, he was charged with three counts of breaking and entering with intent and two counts of larceny in a building. He has also been charged with habitual offender, which makes each offense punishable with life sentences. 

He has a lengthy criminal history, which includes more violent crimes and most recently served a prison sentence for breaking and entering in Macomb county, according to the Michigan Department of Corrections website. 

at the prompting of his family and was turned over to St. Clair Shores police. Meanwhile, Woods officers had been looking for him after they confirmed fingerprint evidence identifying him from the Josef's break-in.
