Police Blotter: 2 Men Arrested for Possession of Burglary Tools

The following information is gathered from the Public Safety Departments of the Grosse Pointes. Arrests do not indicate a conviction.

police arrested two Detroit men about 2 a.m. Sept. 9 near Webster and Kerby roads after they were spotted walking through the area and seemingly out past curfew for juveniles. The men, ages 20 and 21, provided police with a suspicious story about what they were doing out so late and how they came to arrive in that location. They could not provide details to the officers and then were found in possession of several tools, including a hammer and screwdrivers they threw on the ground upon the officer making contact with them. One of the men had a silver ring in his pocket and they had 10 musical CDs with them. The prior night, police took a report related to an attempted break-in of a vehicle in the 400 block of Madison, in which the vehicle was damaged with pry marks on the driver's side door. Both men were charged with possession of burglary tools and arrested on outstanding warrants from other jurisdictions.

Domestic Battery Arrests Made

In the first case, officers arrested a 61-year-old woman Sept. 6 after the mother of one of her grandchildren reported she struck and pushed the 4-year-old child about 7:05 p.m. The woman left their home and called police from Sweeney Park. Additional details were not available from Grosse Pointe Woods police. 

In another case, Grosse Pointe Woods police arrested a man Sept. 9 for domestic battery after a neighbor called police because she heard a woman screaming and what sounded like a person being hit. The responding officers found that a woman was trying to crawl out of the bathroom window and when she spotted them, she asked for help. She allowed police into the house through the front door and police found her on-again-off-again boyfriend in a bedroom. He appeared to be intoxicated and initially refused to follow orders but eventually complied. Officers took 24 photographs of the victim's injuries, which included a bloodied lip, a cut on her arm and bruising. Officers found blood droplets on the bed, pillow and in the bathroom. The pair had been across the street drinking with neighbors earlier in the night, returned home and he left in a car but returned a few hours later waking the victim by straddling her and choking her with his hands. She ordered him to get away from her and the struggle continued. The man, whose age and place of residence was not available, was charged with non-aggravated assault, according to a report.

Loaded Assault Rifle Found During Pursuit

On Sept. 2, Grosse Pointe Woods police assisted Harper Woods police in searching for a man shortly before 5 a.m. who ran from a minivan that had ski masks and a loaded AK-47. The man ran from Harper Woods officers near Lochmoor near Harper. Officers set up a perimeter and searched for the man on Country Club, Lancaster, Canton and Lochmoor as well as nearby alleys without success. It is not clear how Harper Woods police came to encounter the man, according to a report. 

Contractor Dispute Reported

A 56-year-old Grosse Pointe Woods woman reported feeling threatened by a contractor whose company is doing repair work to her Brys Drive home. The woman said she hired the company, gave a down payment of $3,500 and planned to pay the rest after the work was completed. A man who works for the company came to her home to discuss the payment after a secretary at the business said she had to finish paying before the work would be completed. The Woods woman and the employee argued and he began telling workers currently at the home to tear down the work already complete so the Woods woman wrote him a check for $2,500 to prevent him from ripping it down. The woman told police she felt threatened and wanted it on record. Police referred her to the civil division of the courts and urged her to call if she has any problems, according to a report. 

Theft Reported by Guardian

A woman who is the guardian of her uncle reported Aug. 24 to Grosse Pointe Woods police that two rings had been stolen at an unknown time. At least one of the two rings had diamonds in it and she discovered they were missing when her uncle asked to wear them to event. She identified a suspect to the police, according to a report. 

Traffic Stop Yields Counterfeit Money

police seized a counterfeit $50 bill and a knife during a traffic stop Sept. 3 on Lake Shore Road near Woodland Shores. The vehicle was stopped for having an obstructed license plate. When the officer approached he discovered two teenagers—an 18-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl—were in the backseat. The driver has a restricted driver's license that does not allow him to escort passengers under the age of 25 while driving. Officers issued a citation for the violation and the 18-year-old was allowed to drive the vehicle home, according to a report. 

Manhole Cover Replaced 

The Wayne County Road division replaced a missing manhole cover discovered on Lake Shore Road near Stratton Lane Sept. 1. A resident called police to alert them of the missing cover and after confirming it was missing, the department contacted the Wayne County Road department. It was replaced about three hours after it was first reported, according to a report. 

Sign Stolen, Suspect Identified 

A large Neighborhood Club Nursery School sign in the front lawn of 240 Chalfonte was reported stolen to Grosse Pointe Farms police Sept. 7. The sign went missing between 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and the person who reported told police they have suspect, according to the report. 

Debit Card, Check-Cashing Fraud Reported

A 44-year-old Grosse Pointe Farms woman reported that her debit card was fraudulently used multiple times at a Ferndale grocery store a few days after having a suspicious transaction at a Grosse Pointe grocery store, according to a report. 

The victim of an attempted fraudulent check cashing reported Sept. 6 to police that she wishes to prosecute the person whom is believed to be her son. The man arrived at Chase Bank on St. Clair Street with a check from her account for $66 and tried to cash it. The bank contacted the account owner, who told the bank teller she did not write any such check and did not want it cashed. She also asked bank officials to hold the check and then came to the bank.  When the teller told the man he could not cash it, he admitted to writing the check, according to a report.
