Police Blotter: $8K in Collectible Trains Stolen

The following is gathered from the Public Safety Departments of the Grosse Pointes. Arrests do not indicate conviction.

police are investigating the theft of about $8,000 worth of collectible trains and related equipment from a home in the 300 block of Lincoln Road. The thefts are believed to have happened during a three month period from February to April and were discovered this week by the owner who discovered them missing from the area where they are kept in the basement. The trains that were taken were those that were of the highest value in the collection but a circuit panel estimated to be worth $10,000 was not taken, according to a report.

Burglary Investigation Continues

detectives investigation of a theft from a home in the 400 block of LaBelle Road continues after fingerprints gathered from a suspect arrested at the Walgreen's near Mack and Moross turned out to not match that of a person who pawned some of the stolen merchandise. The burglary at the LaBelle home happened May 4 and the thief used a garage door opener that was inside a vehicle parked in the driveway to enter the garage and steal two guitars, an amplifier and a weedwhacker. The guitars were worth about $2,400 and $1,290 respectively and the amplifier about $500. The garage door opener was taken into evidence and police discovered one guitar and the amplifier had been pawned at a Detroit shop. A man fitting the description provided by the pawn shop employees as well as his use of a credit card from another theft from a vehicle at Walgreen's led to his arrest and questioning May 15. However, when officers checked his fingerprints against the fingerprint provided at the pawn shop, it did not match. Detectives are working other leads however on the fingerprint from the pawn shop.

Drunken Driving Arrests

Grosse Pointe Farms police arrested a 26-year-old Clinton Township man May 16 for drunken driving after he was stopped for driving 44 miles per hour in a 30 mile-per-hour zone. The man was driving on Moross near Beaupre and stopped near Moross and Chalfont shortly after 3 a.m. He smelled of alcohol when the officer approached to gather his license and registration. Field sobriety tests were administered but the man could not complete them successfully. He had a preliminary 0.12 percent blood alcohol level and 0.11 percent on a test performed at the police station, according to a report.

In a similar case, Grosse Pointe Farms police arrested a 48-year-old Rochester Hills man May 15 for drunken driving after he passed a police officer on Mack Avenue driving east in the westbound lanes. The officer stopped the man and when he approached the car he smelled like alcohol. The officer asked the man if he knew where he was coming from and whether he understood he was driving the wrong way in traffic, to which the man said he was not aware. He failed several field sobriety tests and had an initial portable breath test showing a 0.25 percent blood alcohol content--more than three times the legal limit. A test performed at the station revealed he had a 0.30 percent blood alcohol content. The man has previous alcohol related convictions and was preliminarily charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol second offense. An arresting officer found the man has two prior alcohol offenses, however and requested the charge be escalated to a felony count, according to a report.

Grosse Pointe Farms police also arrested a 21-year-old Southfield woman May 13 about 3 a.m. for drunk driving after she struck a gas station garbage can and guard rail at the . An attendant called police following the crash and a responding officer found the garbage truck in traffic lanes of Mack Avenue. The woman said she had been in the station getting gas and then began texting someone when she crashed. The woman smelled of alcohol and administered field sobriety tests, which she failed. A preliminary breath test showed she had a 0.18 percent blood alcohol content, according to a report.

Vehicle Stolen from Driveway

Grosse Pointe Farms police are investigating the theft of a Chevrolet 1500 Express from the driveway of a home in the 40 block of Provencal Road May 12. The owner told responding officers she heard the vehicle take off from the driveway shortly before 10 p.m. and then saw it being driving down the street toward Lake Shore Road. She reported that the keys were not taken to the vehicle and that it had been locked. Police did not find any evidence of broken glass from where the vehicle was stolen, according to a report.

Shoplifting Liquor Leads to 2 Arrests

Grosse Pointe Farms police arrested two Detroit women May 13 on charges of retail fraud after they were caught by employees stealing liquor. An employee called police after confronting the women, one of whom returned the stolen merchandise to the employee. Both women, ages 26 and 30, were charged with first degree retail fraud, according to a report.

Harrassment Reported by 2 Women

A 42-year-old Grosse Pointe Farms resident requested special attention to her home after receiving repeated threatening text messages and phone calls from her ex-boyfriend referring to her committing suicide. The woman told police she did not respond to any of the messages and intended to seeking a protection order against the man but in the meantime, she wanted officers to be aware for her safety, according to a report.

A woman who works in Grosse Pointe Farms reported to police that her ex-husband is using the telephone to harass her at work. He called her May 16, began arguing with her and when she threatened to hang up, he said he would continue calling back until he got her fired. He called three more times that day, according to a report.
