Police Blotter: Alleged Drunken Driver Hits, Pushes Parked Car 235 Feet

Bicyclists who witnessed the crash called 911, leading to a woman's arrest. The following information is gathered from the Grosse Pointe Woods Public Safety Department. Arrests do not indicate convictions.

police arrested a 47-year-old resident July 26 about 10:30 p.m. for drunken driving after receiving reports about a GMC Envoy crashing into a parked car in the 500 block of Oxford. The parked vehicle was pushed more than 235 feet from its original location.

Responding officers said they found the woman driving the GMC Envoy near her home in the 900 block of South Oxford a few minutes later. Her SUV had heavy front-end damage and she matched the description of the driver given by the 911 callers, two bicyclists.

According to a report, she smelled of alcohol when police approached. She denied getting into an accident at first but later admitted it, saying she didn't know what to do and planned to take care of it in the morning. The 19- and 20-year-olds who called police said the woman struck the parked car and pushed it down the street. She got out briefly and acknowledged hitting the vehicle, apologized and told the pair she would be right back before driving off at a high rate of speed, according to a report.

Police said the woman refused to cooperate with most police orders, including performing field sobriety tests and submitting to a Breathalyzer. She yelled at the officers repeatedly about how they have no right to question her in front of her home where her neighbors could see and continued to be uncooperative at the police station, where she refused to be photographed and fingerprinted.

Officers obtained a search warrant from a judge to have the woman's blood drawn and she was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, driving on a suspended license and leaving the scene of an accident.

Spent Bullets

A Huntington Boulevard man flagged down a Grosse Pointe Woods police officer July 28 to report that he found two spent ammunition rounds on his back deck. The resident found the rounds while sweeping his deck in the 1900 block of Huntington Blvd. One was loose on the deck and the other was lodged in the wood. According to the officer's observations of the lodged bullet, it appeared to have come from east of the house, according to a report.

Burglary

A woman who moved into a home in the 2000 block of Brys three weeks ago reported that her home was broken into July 28. A television was stolen from a sunroom area and other miscellaneous items were stolen from her upstairs bedroom. The woman's live-in boyfriend found a back window broken out upon arriving home. The woman told police she didn't have any idea who broke in but that while she had a U-Haul truck parked in her driveway, she found a man underneath it a few days earlier. She believes he was trying to steal the catalytic converter but ran from her home. She tried to track him down but couldn't find him and never called police. Following the burglary, a neighbor found a bag with a box belonging to the woman in his yard. Officers took 51 photos of the damage to the house and evidence, including a footprint left behind, according to a report.
