Police Blotter: Assault, Stolen Bicycle, Attempted Break-In

Grosse Pointe Park police arrest man in assault on cabdriver. Another man arrested by Park police in bike theft case.

Grosse Pointe Park police arrested a 61-year-old man March 29 after a cabdriver reported being struck in the head by him. The man police arrested was a passenger in the cab and punched the driver in the back of his head while they were inside the cab near Jefferson and Maryland roads, according to police. Charges are pending.

Break-in Attempted

The doorjamb of a garage in the 1200 block of Wayburn Street was broken some time between March 27 and March 29. Nothing was stolen from the garage, according to police.

Bicycle Recovered

Grosse Pointe Park police seized what they believed to be a stolen bicycle on March 29 in the 1000 block of Wayburn Street from a man with a criminal history involving theft . The 50-year-old Detroit man was later arrested on April 1 in the 1000 block of Beaconsfield after the owner of the bike proved possession and reported it stolen. The man who was arrested told officers he found the bike in the trash but the owner said it was not in the trash, according to police.

Man Outruns Police After Traffic Stop

A young man outran Grosse Pointe Park officers April 1 after officers tried to stop him for speeding on Mack Avenue about 11:15 p.m. The young man jumped out of the vehicle, which was reported stolen, and ran away near Eastlawn and Lozier roads, escaping officers. The vehicle was impounded and is being processed for evidence, according to police. 

Cell Phone Stolen 

Grosse Pointe Woods officers are investigating the theft of a cell phone from a locked locker at Grosse Pointe North High School. The student to whom the phone belonged was in gym class when it was stolen from a locker-room locker that was locked. According to the parent who reported the crime, another student had both a cell phone and an iPod stolen at the same time but that theft has not yet been reported, according to police. The parent put service for the telephone on hold with the phone company and school officials are looking into two individuals spotted entering the locker room during that class period, according to police. 

Teen falls at fraternity house

Butler University Police are investigating a fall by an 18-year-old Grosse Pointe woman inside a fraternity house that happened Saturday. The woman was at the Sigma Chi house when she fell from the second floor of the house to the first. University spokesman Marc Allan said the woman fell over or through a stairway bannister. The woman is not a student at Butler but was visiting and police are investigating whether alcohol was a factor. She was taken to an area hospital but her condition was not immediately available Monday. Allan said she was conscious when paramedics took her via ambulance to the hospital. Her injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, he said. The Butler Bulldogs are vying for a national championship in men's basketball and will play Monday in Houston against the University of Connecticut.
