Police Blotter: Burning Embers Blamed in Garage Fire

The following information was gathered from City of Grosse Pointe and Grosse Pointe Park public safety departments. Arrests do not indicate conviction.

Smoldering embers thrown in the garbage before they were totally out are to blame for a two-car detached garage fire battled by Grosse Pointe Park firefighters June 19. Crews were called to the fire just after midnight June 19 to find flames from the ground crawling up to the eaves, troughs and overhang of the garage. Crews doused the fire, which was in a corner of the garage. 

Suspicious Youth Warned

Grosse Pointe Park police issued warnings to four Detroit young men ranging in age from 12 to 19 after they were spotted in the backyard of a home in the 700 block of Whittier Road June 15. Police received a suspicious persons report about the youth being in the backyard and responding officers found them walking from the scene. Officers stopped them, gathered their identification information and released them with a warning. They did not provide a reason for being in the backyard, according to a report.

Minivan Theft

Grosse Pointe Park police are investigating the theft of a 2000 Chrysler Town and Country minivan. It was taken from the 1400 block of Three Mile Drive between 6:30 p.m. and 12:17 a.m. June 19 to 20, according to a report.

Thefts

The City of Grosse Pointe police are investigating the break-in and theft of a laptop computer from an educational business on Mack Avenue. A Kenniss employee discovered the front window of the business broken out early June 17. The burglar left cash behind and stole a laptop being kept near the front window of the business in the 17200 block of Mack Avenue, according to a report.

In another theft report, a 75-year-old man reported a portable GPS unit, an emergency bilge pump and an emergency handheld radio were stolen from his unlocked boat docked in Neff Park. The man told police the theft happened between June 11 to 15, according to a report. 

An aluminum rack locked up behind Farms Market on Fisher Road was stolen between June 14 to 15. An employee gave police an idea of who may be responsible, according to a report.

Grosse Pointe Park police are investigating the theft of a men's mountain bike from the 1000 block of Beaconsfield Road June 17. The bike was stolen from the owner's backyard and the seat has a rip in it and the handlebars are turned upward, according to a report.
