Police Blotter: Electronics Stolen from Home

The following information is gathered from the Departments of Public Safety of the Grosse Pointes. Arrests do not indicate conviction.

Several electronics including televisions, video game systems, a laptop and other items were stolen from a home in the 700 block of Vernier Road March 10. Grosse Pointe Woods police are investigating the burglary in which a witness saw two men hauling a tv out of the house. She questioned the men about what they were doing and where the resident was. They responded by saying they were waiting for her to get home. The witness felt uncomfortable and left immediately, she told police, trying to call two of the residents but neither answered their phones. She provided police with some description including of a red minivan with a handicapped license plate that was being used by the men.

Driver Charged with Being Drugged

Grosse Pointe Woods police arrested a 20-year-old man March 23 near Vernier Road and Christine Court following a traffic stop for erratic driving. The man was driving on Vernier near Marter Road when an officer saw that his car only had one working brake light rather than two. The man took a while to notice that the officer was attempting to stop him and then stopped by driving into on-coming traffic lanes and then into the curb in the appropriate direction of travel. He told the officer he was a recovering heroin addict but the officer noticed several signs of drug usage ultimately leading to his arrest for operating a vehicle while under the influence of drugs. The man was taken to an area hospital for a blood sample to test for intoxicants and during booking, 20 alprazolam pills fell out of his sock, according to a report.

Cell Phone Reported Stolen from Locker Room

A Grosse Pointe North High School student reported his iPhone stolen from a locker room March 21. According to a Grosse Pointe Woods police report, the student locked his phone in a locker room locker for track practice shortly after 3 p.m. When he returned about 5:20 p.m., his cell phone was gone. The locker had been locked with a combination lock, which he had not shared the combination with anyone. Nothing else was missing, according to the report.

Cars Ransacked, Nothing Taken

Grosse Pointe Woods police received a report of an attempted theft from a parked car March 21 in which the glove box and contents of the car were ransacked. The car owner reported the crime upon discovering the state of his car in the morning and said he did not notice or hear anything suspicious overnight. His unlocked car was parked in the 1900 block of Severn overnight and he said nothing was missing, according to a report. Two other nearby residents also reported having their cars ransacked but nothing was missing on the same day.

Drunk Driver Arrested

Grosse Pointe Woods police arrested a 29-year-old man March 21 for drunk driving after being stopped for having an expired license plate. The officer checked the man's license plate after seeing the car had a defective headlight near Harper and Allard, found it was expired and then stopped the man on Harper near Lochmoor. The man completed some field sobriety tests but not all and then refused to take a breath test. He smelled of alcohol as well. An open bottle of wine was found inside his car. He was arrested and charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, according to a report.

Teens Arrested with Marijuana

Grosse Pointe Woods police arrested two teenagers March 21 for possession of marijuana after a resident in the 1600 block of Oxford reported three suspicious people outside another home about 5:30 p.m. The resident was taking garbage outside when he spotted the trio. When he made eye contact with them, they all ran through the backyards of homes on Fairholme, prompting him to call police. Eventually they were caught with the help of several officers and each had a marijuana cigarette on them. The chase went through several yards. Both are residents of Grosse Pointe Woods and were charged with possession of marijuana. The parents of both teens were called to pick them up, according to a report.
