Police Blotter: Employee Witnesses Vehicle Break-Ins, Calls Police

The following information is gathered from the Public Safety Departments of the Grosse Pointes. Arrests do not indicate conviction.

police arrested a 21-year-old Detroit man Sept. 3 after he sped away from a patrol officer and crashed a van in the 15000 block of Hampton in Detroit. A passenger in the van ran away from the crash scene and officers were unable to find that person. The pair, police found, had allegedly broken into several vehicles in a parking lot and had stolen luggage, a laptop, golf clubs and more, according to a report. An employee of a business near the lot called police after witnessing the crimes and when a responding officer found the van described by the employee, the driver sped up but crashed. The stolen items were recovered from the van. The man was charged with larceny of an automobile and fleeing and eluding police, according to a report.

Intoxicated Teen Arrested

Grosse Pointe Park police arrested an 18-year-old Harper Woods man shortly before 2 a.m. Sept. 2 after he was found to be causing a disturbance. Officers were called to the 15000 block of Charlevoix where they found the teen intoxicated and disturbing the peace in the middle of the street. He was arrested for disorderly conduct, according to a report.

Grosse Pointe Park police are investigating several thefts including:

  • Four silver wheel covers from a vehicle in the 1300 block of Yorkshire Road
  • An unlocked bicycle from a bike rack in the 15100 block of Jefferson
  • An unlocked bicycle from a backyard in the 1000 block of Lakepointe

They also recovered a bicycle reported stolen Aug. 20 after its owner spotted a man sitting on it near Alter and Charlevoix roads on Sept. 4. The owner called police to report her sighting and when responding officers approached the man, they found he had heroin on him. He was charged with receiving stolen property and violation of the controlled substances act by possession of heroin, according to a report.

Recycling Bin Set on Fire

Grosse Pointe Park public safety officers were called to a burning recycling bin in the 1000 block of Kensington Sept. 1. The fire was put out by an extinguisher shortly before 2 a.m., according to a report.
