Police Blotter: Fraudulent Gift Certificates

The following is gathered from the Public Safety Departments of the Grosse Pointes. Arrests do not indicate conviction.

Grosse Pointe Farms police are investigating fraudulent gift certificates reported by Jumps Restaurant after they received two within the last few weeks. An employee reported the fraudulent gift certificates Sunday after a second customer tried to use one. The employee recognized it as fraudulent and to be similar to one used about two weeks prior and only discovered fraudulent after it was used. She asked the customer where she got the certificate and the customer reported buying it online. The employee checked the website provided by the customer and found certificates for sale there but reported to police the restaurant does not sell online. She also reported that another website was selling the gift certificates for Jumps and several other local restaurants, according to a report.

Girls Turned Over to Parents

Grosse Pointe Farms police arrested two 14-year-old Grosse Pointe Farms girls and turned them over to their parents after Beaumont Hospital security found them in the parking garage. The girls were acting suspiciously, according to the security guards, who called Farms police. One of the teenagers was in possession of marijuana and responding officers believed she had been smoking it, according to a report. The marijuana was taken into police evidence.

3 Arrested in Traffic Stop

Grosse Pointe Farms police arrested three men near Mack and East Warren shortly after 5 p.m. Monday after a traffic stop. During the traffic stop, officers discovered the driver was suspended, a passenger had a felony warrant out of Macomb County and another passenger had two misdemeanor warrants out of Harper Woods. All three were taken into custody, according to a report.

16-year-old Arrested in Fight, Battery

Grosse Pointe Farms police arrested a 16-year-old Grosse Pointe Park teen Jan. 10 after he was identified by several witnesses as being the aggressor in a fight with another teenager on Fisher Road. The teen admitted after being arrested that he was in a fight but said the other teen threw the first punch. Two adult women who witnessed part of the fight said the 16-year-old was beating the other in the face and hitting his head on the sidewalk repeatedly. The teen ran away before police arrived but he was found a short time later. Several of the victims friends were with him when the fight broke out and explained it happened after the first teen bumped into another teen in a "bullying" manner. The 16-year-old victim was treated and released at an area hospital for cuts, bruises and a concussion, according to a report.

I had this conversation with a colleague earlier today. His assertion is that the East Side in general is in some sort of freefall. While my argument is that current trends are far better than say, the early-80’s when a wave of crack cocaine befell our fair metropolis. My argument, however, does not preclude action to maintain our status as the preeminent community of means in South East Michigan. While, understanding that budgets are strained right now, I would consider hiring more police officers so that you could add one more patrol officer per shift. This increase would just be temporary but, I believe it would help set the tone that we will not tolerate incursions into our sanctum of civility and proper breeding. On the subject of tone, I would increase enforcement tempo and ask that our police officers present a more menacing face to potential interlopers. I would have the priority shift from writing revenue-generating MIPs and DUIs, to manning a more modern version of the Night’s Watch (Sorry!). For, you see, we must keep the hordes of the undead from breaching into the last toehold of good sense and common decency. In short, it's not as bad as you think, but that's no reason not to take action. I am GP For Life and I call you to action.

Does anyone know what the cost would be to have a dedicated, continuous patrol along Mack?

The kid who beat the other kid is a white resident. Maybe trolls should pay more attention to their kids drug use and date rape.

I don't think anyone disputes that or said otherwise in this thread. Maybe you should pay more attention to the conversation.

Breaking up a fight wouldn't constitute "ganging up" on a person. And yeah that would be tough if my friends were there and didn't help me. I have been in that situation a few times and even when my friend was the aggressor I helped prevent three guys hitting him on the ground. Without throwing a punch either.
