Police Blotter: Fraud, Car Break-In & Power Outage

Police in the Grosse Pointes are investigating a variety of reports.

Teen returns home

A 17-year-old Grosse Pointe Woods man previously reported as missing by his parents was located and did admit to entering after hours. The teen told officers he was not getting along with his parents, which is why he left. He had been staying with his grandmother but one night he entered the school through an open window and slept in a classroom. He left in the morning through a door. A break-in was reported by school officials but nothing was reported missing after teachers reviewed the rooms, according to police reports.

Two Grosse Pointe Woods residents reported unrelated crimes this week.

In the first case, a car in the 500 block of Hidden Lane reported that his car was broken into overnight between April 19 to 20. He did not find anything missing but did find some paperwork that had been in the car near the intersection of Morningside and Vernier roads, according to a police report.

In the second case, a woman reported debit card fraud found by her bank. A representative from the Woods' woman's bank contacted her after finding out-of-state purchases believed to be suspicious. The woman confirmed that it was not her and reported it to police. The fraudulent charges stemmed from a small drugstore purchase, a border crossing fee and a purchase of more than $500 from Air France, according to police reports.

Pill bottle found

A Woods resident living in the 20700 block of Morningside Drive reported finding a prescription bottle of pills on his lawn April 18. He turned the bottle into police, who discovered the bottle contained Excedrin and other pills marked with RP125. Officers tried to determine what the other pills were but were unable. The pills and bottle were put into evidence. The resident told police he lives close to the high school and didn't see anyone dispose of the bottle, according to a report.

Storm causes outage

The municipal building was without telephone service, including the 911 emergency line, for a few hours earlier this week after lightening struck near or on the building. A dispatcher alerted officials of the outage and had the 911 calls re-routed to the City of Grosse Pointe. The 911 line was restored within a few hours and the other official city lines were restored a few hours after that, according to police.
