Police Blotter: Home Invader Crashes Stolen Car

The following information is gathered from the Public Safety Departments of the Grosse Pointes. Arrests do not indicate conviction.

A 58-year-old Detroit man will appear in court Friday, Sept. 2 for a preliminary exam hearing on multiple charges stemming from breaking into a Maryland Street apartment early Aug. 25.

Gregory Rivers is charged with carjacking, first-degree home invasion, unlawful imprisonment, theft of an automobile and prosecutors have attached a habitual offender count to the charges. The man allegedly entered the apartment about 11:15 a.m. and demanded money from the resident. Police said he stole cash, jewelry, a laptop computer and a car. Responding officers spotted the car, followed it and Rivers crashed into a tree, at which time he was arrested. The stolen goods were recovered from the car, according to a report.

Grosse Pointe Park police responded to the 1400 block of Maryland Street about 2:40 a.m. Aug. 25 due to a complaint of a shot being fired. Responding officers discovered that two men began fighting at a Detroit bar, left and ended up in the front yard of a Maryland Street house. Police said the men continued fighting and one of them, who was armed with a shotgun, fired one shot at the other man but missed him. No one was injured and the man who fired the shotgun left the scene before officers arrived, according to a report. 

Jewelry, Silverware Stolen

police are investigating the theft of jewelry and sterling silver silverware valued at $17,000 from a home on Van K Drive. The homeowner's son reported the theft Aug. 29 on behalf of his 73-year-old mother. A brown leather jewelry box containing jewelry valued at $5,000 and an entire set of silverware valued at $12,000 were missing from the house. A relative recently visited the woman and stayed at the home. During the visit the woman showed the items to the relative and after the relative left, she discovered the items were missing, her son reported. The relative lives in California, according to a report.

Boy Injured During Playtime

The father of a 10-year-old Grosse Pointe Woods boy reported his son had been assaulted by a 12-year-old boy Aug. 29 while they were playing at a third friend's home. The father reported the assault Aug. 31 after his son had to seek medical care for his eye due to it becoming red and emitting puss less than 24 hours after the 12-year-old struck and gouged at the 10-year-old's face near his eye. The injured boy reported that his eye hurt upon coming home from playing and told his parents he tackled the boy in retaliation for the strike in the face. The father wanted it documented, as he's asked the 12-year-old's parents to pay the related medical bills, according to a report.

Drugged Driver Arrested near Hospital

Grosse Pointe Woods police arrested a 31-year-old man Aug. 30 after emergency medical technicians driving an ambulance down Mack Avenue reported a vehicle being driven erratically. Police said the driver of the vehicle went through a red light and then was weaving between lanes from curb-to-curb. During the traffic stop, the man was slurring his speech and physically unsteady to the point he was unable to successfully complete field sobriety tests, police said. A preliminary Breathalyzer showed the man did not have alcohol in his system. Police got a warrant from a judge to do a blood draw on the man for drug screening tests. He was preliminarily charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of drugs and for possessing a weapon while under the influence of drugs. The man had a permit to carry a concealed weapon, according to a report. Such permits restrict people from carrying a weapon while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The gun was fully loaded and confiscated by police. 

Prescription Drugs Stolen

Grosse Pointe Woods police are investigating the overnight theft of prescription drugs from a home in the 1900 block of Oxford Road. The woman who reported the theft said she generally gets up every night between 3 and 4 a.m. to take medication. She got up on Aug. 26 to do so and discovered that three bottles of prescription drugs were gone. She told police she keeps them in a cupboard and leaves one of the doors to her home unlocked but did not have an idea of who may have stolen the medication, according to a report.
