Police Blotter: ID Left in Stolen Car, 23 Knives, Brass Knuckles Seized

The following information is gathered from the Public Safety Departments of Grosse Pointe Farms and City of Grosse Pointe. Arrests do not indicate conviction.

An ID left behind in one of two stolen cars recovered in the 4500 block of Farmbrook in Detroit helped police identify a suspect in the crimes.

While investigating the theft of a 2008 Grand Prix stolen from the 400 block of McKinley a Grosse Pointe Farms officer found it, and a car stolen from the City of Grosse Pointe Aug. 2, parked behind an abandoned Detroit home. The car was still warm to touch, indicating the officer found it not long after the theif parked it there.

The two cars were discovered Aug. 7--just a few hours after the Farms resident reported the Grand Prix stolen. Officers searched the house to see if anyone was inside. No one was there but drug paraphernalia was littered throughout, according to a report.

Deputy Public Safety Director John Hutchins said an ID was left inside one of the stolen cars and it's a . Detectives are trying to track him down, Hutchins said.

The Grand Prix was missing its license plate but otherwise in good condition. A child safety seat the owner reported being inside was also missing, according to a report.

The other car recovered, a 2011 Ford Fusion, was not in good condition, however. It was stripped of its wheels, license plate, seats, exhaust and was otherwise heavily damaged, according to reports from the Farms and departments.

In another case, City of Grosse Pointe police are investigating the theft of a vehicle from the 800 block of Neff Road that occurred overnight Aug. 6. The 2003 Jeep was parked on the street across from the owner's home. The owner discovered the theft upon going outside in the morning. He still has both sets of keys and police did not find any broken glass where the SUV had been parked, according to a report. 

23 knives found during arrest 

Grosse Pointe Farms police arrested a 19-year-old Grosse Pointe Woods man Aug. 6 in a parking lot in the 100 block of Lake Shore Road for carrying concealed weapons after an officer found him sleeping in his car packed full of his clothing. After arresting him on an outstanding warrant from Westland, Farms officers found the teen had a prescription bottle belonging to another family member filled with a variety of prescription drugs, 23 knives with a variety of size, type and shape, brass knuckles and drug paraphernalia. The teen also had a 3-foot iron bar that had been sharpened at one end in the car with him, lying near him as he slept, according to a report. 

Burglary

Grosse Pointe Farms police are investigating the burglary of a home in the 100 block of Stephens Road in which the homeowner's wallet, laptop and cell phone were stolen overnight Aug. 5. The woman said she accidentally left her garage doors unlocked overnight and discovered the burglary in the morning. Other valuables were left behind and the homeowner did not hear anything overnight. Detectives were trying to get in touch with the neighbors to find out whether they may have heard or seen anything suspicious, according to a report. Deputy Director John Hutchins said detectives are making efforts to solve this and other similar cases quickly, especially considering the person entered the home while residents were present. 

In another case, the owner of reported to City of Grosse Pointe police that he believes there was an attempted burglary overnight from Aug. 4 to 5. The front door of the business on Fisher Road was damaged, according to a report. 

Credit card fraud

A 24-year-old Grosse Pointe Farms man reported that his credit card was used fraudulently three times at fast food restaurants and a gas station. He reported the fraud Aug. 7, according to a report.
