Police Blotter: Jewelry Theft, Reckless Driving, More in City of Grosse Pointe

City of Grosse Pointe police are investigating the theft of several pieces of jewelry from a home on Washington. The owner reported three pieces of jewelry--one piece worth about $3,750--missing from her jewelry box the day after her jewelry was inventoried. She told police she believes it was stolen by home heath care workers. The stolen items included earrings and a blue topaz and diamond necklace, according to a report filed May 30. The theft happened between April 19 to May 30, according to a report. 

Man Grabs Computer, Runs from Staples

City of Grosse Pointe police are investigating the theft of a computer from Staples. A man entered the store about 11 a.m. June 3, grabbed a laptop and ran out of the store. An off-duty police officer spotted the man running across Mack Avenue with the laptop and get into a vehicle. The vehicle was driven away and officers attempted to pursue it but lost the vehicle near Cadieux and I-94. The laptop was valued at about $800 and the crime was caught on surveillance video, according to a report.

Drunk Driving Arrest

A 42-year-old Harper Woods man is under investigation by the City of Grosse Pointe Department of Public Safety for drunken driving. An officer was helping with traffic control for the Detroit Fire Department at Mack Avenue and Lakeland June 1 shortly after midnight when the man was spotted driving west in the eastbound lanes of Mack Avenue. When the man was stopped, he had watery eyes and slurred speech. He declined to take a portable breath test and the formal test at the police station. He failed field sobriety tests and was arrested on the suspicion of drunken driving, according to a report.

Reckless Driving Ends in Arrest

City of Grosse Pointe police arrested a man May 31 after watching him and another motorist driving recklessly down Jefferson. A third car that was amidst the reckless driving told officers that the two cars had been driving at a high rate of speed and swerving at each other for several blocks. The driver's car, a Chevrolet Camero, was a rental and was impounded following the arrest, according to a report.
