Police Blotter: Misplaced Jewelry, Suspicious Calls

The following arrest information was supplied by the police departments in Grosse Pointe Shores and Grosse Pointe Farms. It does not indicate a conviction.

A resident received two suspicious calls from a man with broken English alerting him he won $1 million that would be dropped off to his Roslyn Road home. The caller phoned twice May 23 and inquired about the resident's schedule under the guise of dropping the winnings off at the house. Officers advised the resident to not provide personal information to any callers and put a special watch on the home, according to a report. 

Property Damage

Grosse Pointe Shores police are investigating damage to the garage door of a Stillmeadow Lane resident who heard a crash about 1:15 a.m. May 22. He heard a diesel-sounding vehicle speed away from his home immediately afterward. A vehicle drove into his garage causing about $2,500 worth of damage.

police are investigating damage to a backhoe parked at the city's department of public works' site on Chalfonte Avenue. Sand was put into the diesel tank overnight between May 17 to 18. The lot has been given extra attention since the event, as a rental backhoe was retained while repairs were made, according to a report.

Misplaced Jewelry

A 51-year-old Grosse Pointe Farms woman reported the theft of $76,500 worth of jewelry only to discover later the jewelry had been misplaced, according to detectives. The woman told officers she went to retrieve some pieces of jewelry and found they were missing. When she took inventory of her jewelry she found that several pieces were missing including a $40,000 ring, a $15,000 diamond-encrusted watch and three strands of pearls worth $10,000, along with a few others. Detectives began investigating the case but the woman then discovered she had misplaced the jewelry, according to police reports and detectives. 

Arrests

Grosse Pointe Shores police arrested a 19-year-old Clinton Township man May 22 on drug-related charges after stopping him for having a loud muffler. The man was charged with driving on a suspended license, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. During the traffic stop, the officer spotted drug paraphernalia on the center counsel of the car, according to a report.

Grosse Pointe Farms police arrested another 19-year-old Park man after he ran a red light while riding his bicycle at Kercheval Avenue and Fisher Road. An officer stopped him for the traffic violation to find that he was carrying a backpack with beer, bags of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, according to a report.

Grosse Pointe Farms police arrested a 32-year-old Warren man May 21 near Mack Avenue and Moross Road for drunken driving. The man was speeding on Mack Avenue during a heavy rainstorm, which triggered police to stop him. He told officers he was driving extra slow because of the wet weather and smelled of alcohol. He admitted drinking at a St. Clair Shores restaurant and said he was driving a friend home. The man has two prior drunken driving convictions, according to a report.

Grosse Pointe Farms also arrested a 46-year-old Farms woman May 22 in the 50 block of Stillmeadow Lane after she was weaving on the roadway. The woman failed field sobriety tests, had slurred speech and glassy eyes. She had a 0.14 percent blood alcohol content and was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated. 

Grosse Pointe Shores police arrested a 46-year-old Florida man May 20 in the 700 block of Lake Shore Road after he made an illegal U-turn at Lake Shore and Vernier roads. The man told officers he had drinks at a nearby private club and had a 0.18 percent blood alcohol content. He was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated and released on a personal bond given by two area judges. 

Underage Drinking

Grosse Pointe Shores police responded to an underage drinking party in the 20 block of Renaud Road May 21 but were unable to make contact with the occupants. When an officer approached the house, several young people scattered, running inside and to the backyard and then no one would answer the door. Officers could see evidence of alcohol on tables and chairs in the house through windows. Eventually officers got in touch with the homeowner, who acknowledged he told his son to not answer the door for police. He also said his adult son was coming to the home to attend to the younger occupants. The adult son showed but told police they were not welcome to search the house and that everyone was staying the night, according to a report. Officers took down information about the cars parked in front of the home and left.
