Police Blotter: Money Scam, Burglary Reported

The following information is gathered from the Departments of Public Safety of the Grosse Pointes. Arrests do not indicate conviction.

police are investigating a scam in which a resident lost $1,560. The resident contacted police after Western Union employees stopped a transfer of $2,400 believing the situation to be a scam, making the 70-year-old resident realize it was as well. He told police he was contacted two weeks prior alerting him that he won $2 million. He was asked to send money to two different accounts in order to receive his winnings, which he did. Then he was asked for the third payment, which is what Western Union officials stopped. Since the resident has received numerous calls regarding the money he was to have sent. He has contacted Comcast to track the phone calls he continues to receive and to change his phone number, according to a report.

Jewelry Stolen from Homes

police are investigating the theft of about 100 pieces of jewelry that were inside a jewelry box stolen from a home in the 1800 block of Allard Road April 29. The owner of the jewelry, which is valued at about $2,000, discovered the theft after several people were at the house for a bon fire. Her bedroom door, which had been locked, was kicked in and the throw plates from the door were found stashed in the front bushes of the home, according to a report.

In another, unrelated case, police are investigating the theft of several pieces of jewelry from a home in the 300 block of Belanger. The resident reported the theft of her jewelry April 30, about a week after she first noticed missing. She returned to Grosse Pointe Farms from vacation, retrieved the jewelry she stored at her bank and came home. She put the jewelry in her purse and put it next to her bed. She discovered the jewelry was missing later that night when she went to put it on. The resident provided police with information about a suspect and explained she would be able to identify her jewelry if it is found. She waited to report the theft in case she discovered it somewhere else in the house, but she never did. The jewelry stolen includes: a sapphire and diamond ring, two broaches, a gold chain, a pair of screw-back earrings and a cultured pearl necklace. The estimated value of the jewelry totals about $2,300, according to a report.

Credit Card Fraud Reported

A 51-year-old Grosse Pointe Farms man reported fraudulent use of his credit card after being notified about his change of address on the card. He had not moved, so he contacted the credit card company and alerted them he had not moved to Florida. The company cancelled his card and re-issued a new card. While reviewing purchases on his card, he discovered an online purchase for more than $1,500 that he did not make. He reported the fraudulent purchase to the credit card company as well as to police, according to a report.

Drunk Driving Arrest

Grosse Pointe Farms police arrested a 46-year-old Detroit woman about 1:30 a.m. May 3 near Mack Avenue and Moross Road for drunken driving. The officer spotted the woman stopped at a green traffic light and then when she finally made a turn, she swerved and drove erratically. When she stopped for the traffic stop, she struck the curb. The woman had an initial 0.23 percent blood alcohol level and a 0.24 percent blood alcohol level on a later test at the police station. She failed all field sobriety tests. She was cited for driving on a suspended license, not having the vehicle registration or insurance in addition to the criminal operating a vehicle while intoxicated charge, according to a report.

Motorist Fails to Turn On Headlights, Gets Arrested

City of Grosse Pointe police arrested a 46-year-old Hazel Park man May 1 after an officer tried to remind him to turn on his headlights three times but he did not respond. The officer flashed the headlights of his patrol vehicle three times and then initiated a traffic stop near Waterloo and Notre Dame. after the driver did not turn his own lights on. During the traffic stop, the officer discovered the man had a misdemeanor warrant out of Hazel Park for domestic assault and he was not licensed.

Wallet Stolen from Church Employee

Grosse Pointe Woods police are investigating the theft of a woman's wallet stolen in a church April 28 during a home-to-home sale. The wallet's owner reported the theft and another church employee found the wallet hidden inside a tampon dispenser inside the ladies restroom in on Vernier Road. During the home-to-home sale, officers took a report about damage to the bathroom caused by an unknown woman who smeared an unknown substance on the walls and threw trash around it. When a staff member that was cleaning the church and grounds checked the bathrooms the next day, the wallet of the employee was found. Its owner discovered two credit cards and about $20 cash to be missing, according to a report.

BB Gun Damage to Door Reported

A Grosse Pointe Woods resident reported finding damage to her front door from a bb gun. The resident discovered the damage April 28 and told officers it happened within the week leading up to then, according to a report.
