Police Blotter: Officer Helps Woman Away from Lake

A Grosse Pointe Shores police officer was recognized for assisting a woman this week, plus other reports from the Pointes.

Public Safety Director Stephen Poloni recognized an officer's efforts this week before the City Council. The officer spent two hours with a 51-year-old woman at the edge of Lake St. Clair on May 12. The woman, whose husband had reported her to police as being in a concerning state, was spotted near the break-wall near Lake Shore Road and Fontana Lane. She was sitting in the grass with two prescription bottles sitting near her when the officer approached her. The woman admitted she was suffering from depression and having problems. The officer convinced her to go to the hospital for help, and contacted her husband to retrieve her car, according to a police report.

Child Support Arrest

police arrested a 48-year-old Detroit man May 16 on several warrants including two child support cases involving more than $75,000. A patrol officer checking the license plate on his vehicle found it was not on record through the state and stopped him near University Place and Mack Avenue.

U-Turn Leads to Arrest

police arrested a 33-year-old Detroit woman May 14 near Mack Avenue and Kerby Road after she made an illegal u-turn. During the traffic stop, officers discovered she was driving on a suspended license. Officers found marijuana, paraphernalia and currency from around the country in her car, all of which was taken into evidence. The woman said her sister had recently gotten out of the military and she took the currency to the bank to exchange it but bank officials told her to sell it on eBay. She was charged with driving on a suspended license, possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia and false informing.

Warnings Issued to Teens

Grosse Pointe Farms police issued warnings to three teenagers stemming from two different situations.

In the first, officers found an intoxicated 18-year-old woman and a 17-year-old female teen parked in the lot of a church May 14. They denied drinking but breathalyzer tests showed they had 0.06 and 0.14 alcohol readings. The parents were called to the scene and officers issued warnings. 

In another case, an 18-year-old Farms resident was spotted skateboarding while holding onto a moving vehicle near Kercheval Avenue and Kenwood Road May 11. The teen continued skateboarding even after police performed a traffic stop on the vehicle but tracked him down at home, warning parents that he would face penalties next time. 

Backpack Swiped

A boy reported the theft of his backpack from outside a grocer on Fisher Road, according to Grosse Pointe Farms police. The boy left his backpack outside containing a wallet and prescription eyeglasses May 12 about 2:40 p.m. When he came back outside, it was gone, according to a report.

Bike Taken from Garage

An 18-year-old Farms resident reported the theft of a bike from an open garage overnight between May 11 to May 12. The bike is red and has a basket attached to the handlebars. It was taken from a garage in the 200 block of Ridge Road.

Teen Arrested for Drunk Driving

Grosse Pointe Shores police arrested an 18-year-old St. Clair Shores man May 13 after stopping him for crossing the center line and hitting a curb. The man failed field sobriety tests and had a 0.14 percent blood alcohol content. He told officers he was driving home from a concert in downtown Detroit when he was stopped near Lake Shore Road and Crestwood. He was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated and minor in possession of alcohol, according to a report.
