Police Blotter: Rum-Drinking Teen Batters Friend

police are investigating an assault by a 16-year-old Woods boy to another 16-year-old Woods boy that landed the victim at the hospital Feb. 25. emergency medical technicians were called to the victim's home in the Woods, from where he was taken to the hospital via ambulance. A Woods police officer investigating the injuries discovered the battery happened at field where the teens, with a third friend, had gone to drink shots of rum. After several shots, the one boy became irritable and erratic, swinging his arms. The other boy tried to calm him down but the first boy began striking his friend in the face with a closed fist. When the victim arrived home his mother called for an ambulance. The alcohol, the boys reported, had been purchased from a party store near 8 Mile and Kelly roads without any identification, according to a report.

Farms Man Believes He was Scammed

An 80-year-old Grosse Pointe Farms man believes he was the victim of fraud. He reported the suspected fraud to Grosse Pointe Farms police Feb.  29 and explained he had been contacted on Feb. 20 by a person representing themselves as being from Microsoft. The man offered to install anti-malware software on the Farms resident's computer, which he allowed. The man then charged the man $119 for the service, which he paid for using a credit card. The Farms resident found later in the day both programs are offered free through Microsoft and he believes the person who called and installed the software remotely may now have personal information, including credit card numbers, from his computer. Farms police advised the man to alert his accounts and to put a fraud alert on each of them, according to a report.

Identity Fraud Reported

A 56-year-old woman reported her social security number stolen Feb. 27 after discovering the theft from the IRS. The woman filed her taxes and was waiting for her return but when it did not post to her bank account, she called to inquire about what happened. A representative at the IRS explained that a person was using her social security number and advised her to report the theft to a credit bureau and the Federal Trade Commission, according to a report.

Drunk Driving Arrest

City of Grosse Pointe police arrested a 47-year-old resident Feb. 26 for drunk driving after he ran a stop sign at Charlevoix and St. Clair Street. The man was also weaving across the center line The man smelled of alcohol and had bloodshot eyes. He had a 0.19 percent blood alcohol content. The formal breathalyzer test could not be administered because the machine detected interference so the officers took the man to an area hospital for a blood draw, according to a report.

Police Find Woman's Brother

A 49-year-old Grosse Pointe Woods woman reported her 37-year-old brother missing Feb. 28. He is diabetic and has mental health problems. The man's car was found abandoned by Roseville Police, Woods officers discovered during their investigation. After making several checks at local hospitals, jails and other places, the man was still not found but eventually it was discovered the man was being housed in the Oakland County Jail on a trespassing charge, Detective Sgt. Raymond Yonkowski said. 

Domestic Dispute Ends in Hospitalization 

Grosse Pointe Woods police took a 19-year-old resident to a local hospital for psychological evaluation after responding to his house because of a domestic dispute. The teen's father confronted him about a marijuana pipe he'd found in the son's car and an argument ensued. The teen began destroying items in the house using his body, such as punching holes in a door and head-butting a glass door. The son also threatened to kill himself several times and held a knife to his abdomen. The mother also reported to police that the son pushed the father down to the ground during the argument but the son denied doing so, according to a report. 

Purse Stolen from Unlocked SUV

Grosse Pointe Farms police are investigating the theft of a resident's purse that was stolen from her SUV in the 100 block of Moran Road. The woman said she parked her SUV in the street and must have left the vehicle unlocked about 3 p.m. Feb. 25. When she returned about three hours later, she discovered her purse was missing but the SUV was not damaged. The woman had identification, a credit card and two check books inside in addition to $40 cash, according to a report.

Attempted Shoplifting Leads to Warrants Arrest 

Grosse Pointe Farms police arrested a 56-year-old Detroit man on two warrants from Detroit  Feb. 25 after he was reported by gas station employees for trying to steal candy bars. The man was approached by an employee, who asked for the candy bars back that he had shoved in a pocket and not paid for. He gave them back and left. When responding officers arrived, they found the man at the bus stop. While doing a check on him, they discovered he had a felony warrant out of Detroit for aggravated assault and a civil warrant for child support, according to a report.
