Police Blotter: Credit Fraud, Stolen Truck and Drunken Driving

The following information is gathered from the Public Safety Departments of the Grosse Pointes. Arrests do not indicate convictions.

police are investigating the theft of a truck from the parking lot of St. John's Hospital. The 28-year-old Grosse Pointe Farms owner was at the hospital for the birth of his daughter. His mother-in-law went out to the parking lot to use his truck but it was gone. They searched the lot for a while before calling police.

Drunk Driving Arrests

police arrested a 22-year-old Detroit man for drunken driving Dec. 5 after he drove left of center while pulling into a bank parking lot near Mack Avenue and Moross Road. The man smelled of alcohol, had bloodshot eyes and was unsteady on his feet. He did not follow an officer's direction well, had poor coordination and had a 0.10 percent portable breath test. During a more formal test, he had a 0.14 percent blood alcohol content. This is the man's third impaired driving arrest as he has prior convictions for drunken and drugged driving, according to a report.

Farms officers also arrested a 35-year-old Detroit man for drunken driving Dec. 2 near Mack Avenue and East Warren after stopping him for having a defective headlight. The man failed field sobriety tests and had a 0.09 percent blood alcohol level on a portable test. The man refused to take the more official test, so the officer received a warrant from a judge to have the man's blood drawn. A 43-year-old woman who previously lived on Stephens Road in Grosse Pointe Farms and had her home broken into and several items stolen reported that she believes a recent transfer of funds from a bank account is related to the home invasion. The transfer of $10,000 is an action that would have required the woman's social security number, so she believes the person that stole items from her home in August may have her social security number as well. She discovered the transfer after being denied a purchase at an area store, according to the report.

Credit Fraud Reported

Grosse Pointe Farms police are investigating two separate reports of identity fraud. In the first case, a resident called police after receiving copies of her credit report from the three main credit bureaus and discovered three store credit cards had been opened in her name but were not opened by her. According to the credit reports, none of the cards had balances. In the second case, a resident received two calls a few days in a row from two different stores—Kohl's and Walmart—stating that an individual was trying to open a credit card using her name, social security number and address. The woman said she had not authorized the opening of such accounts.
